Jose Cañas

Jose Mauricio Cañas, 85, a resident of Baldwin Park, CA, passed away on November 16, 2025. Jose was born in Berlin, El Salvador on January 5, 1940. He was an elementary school teacher in Berlin. He emigrated to the United States in 1965 and his family joined him several years later. He devoted himself to various occupations, including upholstery and furniture manufacturing, skills in which he took pride. Jose loved to reminisce about his life in his beloved Berlin and the many people he knew there. 

Jose enjoyed the company of family and friends and loved music, especially trios, Latin dance music and the music of Perez Prado, Billy Vaughn and Ray Conniff. He was a self-taught dancer who loved gatherings and charmed everyone with his teasing and playful sense of humor. He was a lifelong learner who loved math and the life sciences. 

Jose is survived by his children, David (Myrna), Edgar (Cecilia), Jose, Jr. (Maria) and Ruth (Paco); grandchildren Joseph and Rebekah; sister Margarita Fagoaga; nieces, nephews, and extended family. He is predeceased by his daughter, Rosemary (Ruben), and his wife, Marina, with whom he enjoyed fifty-one years of marriage.

A visitation for Jose will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Forest Lawn Covina Hills, 21300 Via Verde Drive, Covina, CA 91724. Funeral services will occur on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Church of our Heritage, Forest Lawn Covina Hills, 21300 Via Verde Drive, Covina, CA 91724. Burial will follow at Cherished Memory, Forest Lawn Covina Hills.
