Jon Norden Olson passed away on August 23, 2026, at Torrance Memorial Hospital. He was born on November 13, 1939, in Lake Park, Minnesota, and lived a life marked by curiosity, steady dedication, and a quiet generosity that left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Jon was a man of learning and discipline. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Math and Science Education from Moorhead State College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and later completed a Master of Arts in Physics at the University of South Dakota. His commitment to education continued through graduate coursework at Moorhead State College, the University of Maryland extension, and the University of South Dakota. Professionally, he worked at Hughes Aircraft, later acquired by Boeing, where his interest in science and mathematics found a natural home.

He took great pride in serving as a Reserve Certified Line Officer for the Los Angeles Police Department from March 1970 to May 1994 while being awarded with Harbor reserve of the year in 1985, an accomplishment that reflected his sense of responsibility and commitment to the community.

Jon will be remembered for his dry sense of humor and sharp wit. He was sarcastic in a way that made people smile, approachable in conversation, and never afraid to play devil’s advocate. He was thoughtful, frugal, and minimalist, and very generous. He was patient, open without judgment, and someone who genuinely enjoyed talking with others and learning from the world around him.

At home and in daily life, Jon found joy in working around the house, building and fixing things, and taking on new challenges. He loved learning new things and was drawn to science and mathematics. And if he wasn’t at home, you could make a safe bet that he was making a trip to Home Depot.  He also enjoyed Jeopardy, a fitting pastime for someone whose mind was always active and engaged.

His family will hold close many treasured memories, including fun long family road trips and the unforgettable image of Jon impatiently waiting for the 1969 moon landing broadcast to end so he could rush off to the Johnny Cash concert at the Forum. Moments like these captured both his curiosity and his spirited sense of fun.

Jon is survived by his wife, Queena Olson; his sons, Robert L and Robert T; his daughter, Jennifer; his grandsons, Justin and Jonathan; his granddaughters, Melissa and Tamara; his sisters, Kathy and Linnea. Preceded in death by his father, James Olson; his mother, Agnes (Erickson) Olson; his brother, Sherwood. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends.

Those who knew and loved Jon will remember a man of intelligence, humor, service, and heart.
