Gardena

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Won Suk Yoo, a gentle soul who dedicated his life to caring for others and who departed this world far too soon.

Born Yong Suk, “Yong” symbolizing the spirit of a dragon, courageous, wise and serene, a name chosen by his father, on June 20, 1974, in the city of Chicago. Later, renamed by his mother as Won Suk, “Won” which stood for desired or liked. His Christian name John was chosen by his older brother Paul but at home, he was lovingly called “Jjang Goo” by his older siblings for his handsome forehead and chubby cheeks when he was a child.  John carried these names, and the spirit of compassion in his heart to every corner he ventured, ultimately finding his way to Gardena, California, where he breathed his last on October 11, 2024.

An ardent student of life, John reveled in storytelling through the magic of movies. This passion for film reflected a depth of imagination and a keen understanding of the human experience—further nourished by the rich tapestry of relationships that lustrously colored his life.

For many years, John devoted himself to providing care to the elderly, showering them with the kindness and attention. With a personality that melded reticence with an undeniable warmth, he had a knack for putting others at ease, coaxing hearty laughter from within himself—a delightful sound that was all too contagious. Those who frequented his presence know well that his laughter was not just a sound but an invitation, an open door for camaraderie and connection.

John will be profoundly missed by all, including his mother, Sue Hae Yoo, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond built on love and respect. He leaves behind his brothers, Min and Jung, his sisters-in-law Robyn annd Jay, cherished nieces Lauren and Emily, and his beloved nephew, Jason. In spirit, he remains surrounded by a flock of cousins, notably John, Jimmy, Bobby, and Jane, with whom he forged special connections that transcended time and distance.

As family and friends gather to pay their final respects, they find solace in the collective celebration of a life richly lived. Especially in those quiet moments, when the laughter fades and the chatter quiets, we shall remember John for his gentle spirit, his hearty laugh, and his unwavering love for those around him.

Following the graveside service a reception will be held at Fuji Buffet and Grill, 300 Harvey Drive, Glendale, CA 91206. (818) 553-1688.
