John Edward Hawley, 66, born on October 15, 1948, in Birmingham, United Kingdom, passed away March 24, 2015 at his home in Glendale, California with his wife Jacky, daughter Elizabeth and son David at his side.

An outstanding scholar and engineer, John was respected for his roles in major civil engineering projects around the world, including Iran, Indonesia, Egypt, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait, Georgia USA and California, USA.

He was an accomplished amateur photographer, and during his extensive travels recorded his observations of social history, landscapes, sporting events, engineering projects and intimate images of nature.

John attended King Edward VI Camp-hill school which was known for competitive swimming at which John excelled. Throughout his time at Cambridge University he rowed for Churchill College, including 2nd seat the Fairbairns 1st boat in 1971. Three of his resulting trophy-oars accompanied him around the world! He began serious cycling around the age of 17 when he covered hundreds of miles exploring the Lake District in northern England. Many years later in California he picked up the sport again, using mountain bikes and a road bikes to achieve impressive climbs and distances.

John enjoyed being at home with his family, his music, his books, garden, model train and household projects. He was an excellent cook and generous host. A devoted husband and father, he is loved and missed by family, friends and colleagues.

Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Glendale, California.
