Plaistow, NH: John E. "Jack" Hansbury, 84, a resident of Plaistow since 1959, and a well- known businessman and active member of the town, died on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Born, raised and educated in Beverly, MA, son of the late Harold and Nora (Callely) Hansbury, he graduated from Beverly High School with the Class of 1949, where he was Captain of the Varsity Basketball Team and a member of the Varsity Baseball Team. Mr. Hansbury attended Illinois State and graduated from the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance.

Mr. Hansbury served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1956 and was a recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

As a young man Mr. Hansbury was employed as an auditor for the Department of Agriculture and later for B.F Goodrich. He purchased the Chester Milnes Insurance Agency in 1959 and ran the company until he sold it 1987. He purchased the Joseph S. Hills Agency in Plaistow in 1967 and served as its president until retiring in 1997.

He was a longtime member of the Board of Directors of the former Plaistow Cooperative Bank, serving for twenty-two years and fifteen years as the Chairman of the Board

Mr. Hansbury was actively involved in many activities in the Town of Plaistow, serving on the Plaistow Board of Adjustment for fifteen years, the original Town Manager Search Committee for Plaistow and as Vice President of the Pollard School PTA for many years.

He was instrumental in establishing the Minor League Baseball program in Plaistow and also coached Little League for twelve years. Along with several others, he helped form the original Timberlane Junior Football program and served as the League's first Treasurer. He also coached youth basketball for several years, including the Holy Angels CYO Basketball team for two years. Additionally, he took game films for the Timberlane High School Varsity Football team for eight years.

A member of the Carl Davis Post of the American Legion, The New Hampshire Association of Insurance Agents and St. Luke the Evangelist Parish, Mr. Hansbury served on the former Holy Angels Parish Council and as an usher and altar server. A devoted husband, father and grandfather he enjoyed spending time at his summer home at Bow Lake and traveling in his later years. He was also an avid and loyal Red Sox, Celtics, and Notre Dame fan.

He was predeceased in 1997 by his wife of forty-four years, Shirley A.(Dion) Hansbury, and is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Peter B. Hansbury of Montpelier, VT, David T. and Mary Hansbury of Plaistow, and John M. Hansbury of Plaistow, three grandchildren, Laura McCormick and her husband Jack of Los Angeles, CA, Jeffrey Hansbury of Boston, and Annie Hansbury of Waterville, ME, a brother, Robert Hansbury and his wife Barbara of Peabody, two sisters-in-law, Marie White and her husband James of Ipswich, and Alice Colbert and her husband Donald of Beverly, his friend and companion, Eleanor Finn, of Salem, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Borsetti and Ann Davekos.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mr. Hansbury's Life Celebration on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Route 121A, Plaistow, NH. His funeral will begin on Thursday, August 13 at 9 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish. Burial with military honors will follow in Plaistow Cemetery.
