John Joseph "Jack" Duffy

August 15, 1922 — August 26, 2015

Jack Duffy, 93, of Encino passed away peacefully of natural causes on August 26th surrounded by loved ones and caregivers. Jack is survived by his son Steve Duffy (Barbra), daughter Kathy Davis (Gerry), grandchildren James Davis (Valerie), Sarah West (Paul), Parker Davis, and Patrick Duffy, as well as a brother, sisters, nieces, nephews, and many family members and friends. Jack was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Audrey, in 2013.
Jack was a Braddock PA native, enlisted in the Army when he was 20, and flew the B 17 Flying Fortress in the European Theatre. After the war he earned his bachelor's degree in economics and statistics from the University of Pittsburgh. He settled in California in 1948, and joined Security 1st National Bank (ultimately Security Pacific National Bank) as a securities analyst. He retired in 1987 as an Executive Vice President. During his career Jack was a member of the L.A. Chamber of Commerce, a Board Member for Little Sisters of the Poor, Treasurer of St. Cyril's Parish Council, and served on the Board of Trustees of Loyola Marymount University.
The first 16 years of Jack's retirement were filled with exercise—generally a daily 6-mile walk along Ventura Boulevard--morning Mass, copious amounts of reading including practically daily memorization of the Wall Street Journal, and gardening. His frequent trips and vacations spent with his children and grandchildren were the highlights of his retired life. After a serious stroke in 2003, many of his retirement activities were curtailed but his love and talent for gardening never ceased. As they planned, he and Audrey, spent the remainder of their lives in their home of 53 years.
Above all Jack truly was happiest when involved in helping others---when something needed to be done, when wise counsel or empathy was needed, Jack really was the "Go to Guy". He leaves a legacy of kindness, generosity, and selfless love. He could light up any room with his smile. He will be greatly missed.
A funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at St. Cyril's Parish, 15520 Ventura Blvd, Encino, followed by a graveside service at Forest Lawn Glendale. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in the name of John Duffy can be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor www.littlesistersofthepoorsanpedro.org
