Dr. John C. Weaver, Jr., known affectionately to many as Big John, Johnny, Doc, and Dr. Weaver, passed away on January 23, 2025, in California. John was born on August 12, 1944, in Tennessee, to Dr. John C. Weaver Sr. and Beaulah Lee Holsey, who proceeded him in death. John lived a life filled with compassion, intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to his profession, family and many close friends.
After graduating high school at Moses Brown in Providence, Rhode Island, John pursued a B.S. in Chemistry at Hobart College, where he developed a passion for photography and was active in his fraternity, delighting in the organization of lively toga parties. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1969, where he bravely served as an officer in the tank division stationed in Germany, he embarked on his journey in medicine. John, who was first accepted to Meharry Medical College in a clerkship program, quickly displayed his intelligence and was accepted to and graduated from its School of Medicine—his father's alma mater, and where John met his first wife, Charlene.
In 1976, John’s academic excellence led him to complete his residency at Columbia's Harlem Hospital, where he not only honed his medical skills but also shared a special bond with his younger brother, Ronald, whom he supervised during his residency while Ronald was an intern. Their mutual respect and camaraderie were evident in the lighthearted moments they shared, exemplified by John’s jovial declaration of "Weaver is on call, I'm going to sleep, wake me up when it is time to report to the Attending," whenever he learned Ronald was on call with him.
Following his residency, John actively contributed to healthcare in New York City, where he was deeply involved in housing and zoning affairs, and played a significant role in various rehabilitation facilities. The late 70s brought a move to Los Angeles, where he reunited with his mother and brother. In LA, he found love once more, marrying Stephanie Edwards in a romantic ceremony in Paris and welcoming his first child, Brandon Weaver, into the world in 1980. Although John's marriage to Stephanie ended in divorce in 1981, he later married Sabrina Weaver, and through this union, welcomed two more children, John Weaver III and Moret Weaver.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, John's dedication to his medical career saw him working at numerous clinics across Los Angeles and San Bernardino County. He often juggled multiple practices, exemplifying an inspiring work ethic and a heartfelt commitment to his patients. During difficult times, like when Ronald faced a near-fatal heart attack in 1992, John stepped in to help cover his brother's practice, showcasing the profound love and loyalty he held for his family, no matter the distance in space or communication.
In 1992, John relocated with Sabrina and their children to San Bernardino County, where they would create lasting friendships, particularly with the Okamura family, who became close companions. John cherished evenings filled with laughter and the joy of shared moments, often gathered around his impressive big screen TVs.
A generous and caring soul, John was renowned for his culinary skills, preparing signature dishes such as beef stroganoff, crab Newberg, Denver omelets, ribs, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, and greens. He had an innate ability to engage others intellectually, encouraging them to think critically and always speak with intelligence and confidence.
John's love for technology and cars reflected his dynamic personality. An enthusiastic cinephile he had the best at home-theatre and movie collection, always stayed on top of the latest gadgets and had a penchant for attending car shows, showcasing not just his interests but his excitement for innovation.
In 2018, after years of transformation and growth, John married Hanny Djajaputera, creating a new chapter in his life. His love for his family was evident, and he took immense pride in his accomplishments—his children and grandchildren were always at the forefront of his heart.
John is survived by his wife, Hanny Djajaputera, children, Brandon M. Weaver, John C. Weaver III, and Moret N. Weaver and husband (Albert Albanez), grand children, Rico Weaver and Jacqueline "Jackie" Weaver, and brother, Dr. Ronald Weaver. He is also remembered fondly by his ex-wives and friends, Charlene and Sabrina Weaver, who remained close to him and his bonus daughter Audrey Claunch. John now joins his dear friend Lisa Okamura in eternal rest.
