Joanne Moore
February 18, 1936 - January 8, 2015
Joanne Moore, a long time Glendale resident, passed away peacefully in her sleep brought on by complications of Alzheimer's disease. Joanne was born in Los Angeles and attended North Hollywood High and continued her education at Redlands University and USC where she graduated in Education. She met her husband, Tom, at USC and was married for 55 years. Joanne was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority at USC and served as Chapter president in her senior year. Upon graduation, Joanne was a stewardess for TWA for a year and then began her public elementary school teaching career in Culver City and San Carlos. After the birth of her children, Joanne continues as a substitute teacher in the Burbank Public School System for over 30 years. She loved the little kids and primarily taught kindergarten and first grade.
As a little girl, Joanne loved to read. That avocation continued on into adult life and she was a charter member of her book group for over 30 years. Joanne also volunteered her time for several years to CARES in their drop-in Day Care Center at County General/USC Hospital. Joanne was a very energetic person who loved her life and was a positive influence within her family and among her friends. She also was a big USC Trojan football fan and attended most home games to root the team on.
Upon retirement, Joanne & Tom traveled throughout the USA and in Europe, on numerous river cruises. Most of all, Joanne loved visiting the National Parks, having worked in Yellowstone during the summer through her high school and college years. Yosemite National Park was her favorite and she visited often with her young family and later in life just with Tom. Joanne also loved the beach and after she retired, had many fun times at their condo in Oceanside.
Joanne is preceded in death by her son Dan. She is survived by her loving husband Tom, her son Scott, and his wife, Tammy. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Chris and Tanner, her brothers Jack & Bob Leach and their wives, Maureen and Donna, and her sister-in-law's Jane Ogostalick and husband, Edward and Bettie Hayes. During the last six months of her life, Joanne received loving care at Belmont Village and at Alta Vista with special thanks to her caregiver, Benji. The family also wants to thank Dr. Laila Hanna for her care and accessibility both day and night.
Services will be held on January 20th at 1 PM at Wee Kirk of the Heather, Forest Lawn, Glendale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joanne's memory to Mary Easton Center for Alzheimer's disease Research at UCLA, 10911 Weyburn Ave., L.A. 90095 or to https://secure.yosemiteconservancy.org/donate/memorial.cfm (Yosemite Conservancy), 101 Montgomery St., San Francisco, 94104.
