After suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, Jimmie Eisenwinter passed on January 26, 2025. She was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Clara Opal Powell and Hanfurd Eugene Powell. She attended elementary school in Oklahoma, middle school in Earlimart California and she graduated from Delano High School. She attended junior college at the College of the Sequoias before transferring to La Verne College. She graduated from La Verne College (Class of 1962). Jimmie married George Wallace (Wally) Mickel at age 22 and had two children, Terri, and William (Bill). Sadly, Wally passed in 1968. Wally’s parents Ruth and George Mickel, and Jimmie’s brother Bill Powell helped watch her children while she was working as a single mom. In 1969 Jimmie married a very dedicated and loving man Al Eisenwinter. They were married at the Claremont Presbyterian Church. In 1971 their daughter Robin was born. In 1972 they decided to become residents of Claremont.
Jimmie owned and operated her own business The Indian Hill Day Care Center in Claremont. Indian Hill Day Care provided a safe supportive place for hundreds of children. Through Jimmie’s business she provided training for high school students and adults with firsthand training and skills development. Her demeanor was kind and tolerant. She worked incredibly hard, often from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 5 days a week. She would make special one-on-one time with each of her children and grandchildren taking them on shopping trips or taking them out to lunch. One of Jimmie’s favorite pastimes was attending her son Bill’s soccer games and later her grandchildren’s soccer games. Jimmie was often seen pacing the sidelines at the soccer games. For 35 years she was known as a soccer mom and grandma. After Terri’s three children were born, Jimmie retired from day care work to become a full-time grandma.
In 2004, Jimmie and Al decided that it was time to consider moving to a retirement community. The best choice for them was Hillcrest in La Verne. Jimmie was an avid and fast reader and read many books from the Hillcrest Library. She also loved attending Al’s drama shows, and his sing-alongs. She and Al were showstoppers at Hillcrest dance events. Jimmie and Al enjoyed going on cruises to Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, and the family trip to Canada for Bill’s State Championship soccer games. They were also members of the “gang,” an informal La Verne College alumni group of life-long friends.
In her youth Jimmie was also highly active. She kept statistics for the boys’ basketball team, picked cotton in the local fields, and she won a local beauty pageant. In Delano, she attended the Baptist church three times a week and later would go on to lead youth groups at the Claremont Presbyterian Church. Jimmie is preceded in death by her son William (Bill) Eugene Eisenwinter. Jimmie is survived by her husband Al Eisenwinter; two daughters-Terri Wright(Chris) and Robin Giffin(Doug); her brother Bill Powell; 4 grandchildren- Brian Wright(Hannah) , Cori Healer(Shawn), Devin Wright(Corey) Aler Giffin; 3 great-grandchildren-Prescott Healer, August William Healer and Ezra Seidler-Wright and many more extended Powell, Eisenwinter, and Mickel Family. Jimmie’s Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 1:00pm in the Hillcrest Meeting House in La Verne, CA. Jimmie’s final resting place will be Forest Lawn Covina Hills. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you please donate to the Alzheimer’s Association.
