On Monday, June 1, 2020, God called Jimmie DeVon Dixson to his eternal home in Heaven. He passed away peacefully at an assisted living facility in Yorba Linda, CA. Jimmie was born on July 22, 1936 in Jackson, TN to Lofair Dixson Senior and Georgia Flournoy Dixson.
Jimmie was a star high school athlete and football player at Jackson Central Merry High School in Jackson, Tennessee. After graduating, he took courses at Mississippi Industrial College and Rust College in Holly Springs, MS attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta, GA and later moved to Los Angeles, CA where he met the love of his life Annie M. Williams of Kenner, LA. Jimmie and Annie joined in holy matrimony on September 28, 1968.
A natural born leader, Jimmie has an extensive history of advocacy and activism. After gaining employment with Angelus Sanitary Can Machine Company, he became a member of the United Steelworkers of America in 1967. He was involved in union issues at the plant, and served in various union capacities throughout his career including Staff Representative and Civil Rights Coordinator. Although his duties were demanding, Jimmie also served as the Vice President of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor for three terms, President of Los Angeles chapter of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute for two terms, President of the San Gabriel Valley Branch NAACP for three terms, and President of the West Covina Democratic ClUb for one year.
Jimmie was a loving and caring family man. He spent quality time with his wife and children swimming, camping, fishing, going to baseball games, finding pumpkins at the local pumpkin patch, and celebrating special occasions. In his spare time, Jimmie loved to garden and listen to jazz music. On any given day, you would find Jimmie tending to his garden and whistling tunes of famous jazz artists.
Jimmie is preceded in death by wife Annie Mae Dixson, parents Lofair Dixson Sr. and Georgia Flournoy Dixson, sister Wilma Cooper, and brothers Lofair Dixson Jr. and Clarence Dixson.
Jimmie is survived by his daughter Rodriquress Dixson Broadnax of Camden, AR, son and daughter-in-law Jonathan Maxwell and Michelle Dixson of West Covina, CA, and daughter and son-in-law, Ingrid Anissa and Ray Hardy of Los Angeles, CA. Affectionately known to his grandchildren as "Grandfather," he is survived by five grandchildren: Eric, Devon, and Khalia Dixson and Jasmine and Anissa Hardy.
Also left to cherish his memory are two brothers Willie (Shirley) Poston, Lovell (English) Burton, four sisters Carolyn Love, Carrie Fowler, Dr. Vicki Burton, and Belinda Burton; three uncles Athen (Margery) Flournoy, Herbert (Atlanta) Flournoy, Rev Lawrence Lanier, one aunt Gloria Mason and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2020, at Forest Lawn in Covina Hills, at 3:00 p.m. Flowers may be sent to 21300 Via Verde Drive, Covina, CA.
