Jhett was born to Mercedes and Miguel Duñgo in Manila, Philippines. He was the 4th of 7 boys and 1 sister. Jhett came from a well established family of elite athletes known for their achievements in tennis--some of whom competed in Wimbledon and the Davis Cup. This naturally paved the way for Jhett's love of sports and to try his hand in tennis as a young child.
Jhett attended Letran de Manila High School. Being that his older brothers had already dominated the tennis world, it is here that his passion for basketball grew and he began to carve his own path in sports. He played basketball in high school and continued in college at National University. Jhett carried on with his basketball career playing for the Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA). He was the captain of Concepcion Motorolas and led them to victory, winning the Championship in 1971. In 1975, Jhett became one of the pioneers to play for the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Jhett enjoyed staying physically active and continued playing basketball recreationally until his children began playing sports of their own. He worked for Deluxe Inc. before moving onto the Office of Finance for the City of Los Angeles. While his children attended St. Joseph the Worker School, he carried on his passion becoming known as "Coach Duñgo" for the Boys basketball team. Jhett was an active member of the Church Ministry for St. John Eudes Church. He was the former President for the Kiwanis Club of Phil-Am Los Angeles. Throughout the years, Jhett supported each and every one of his children through extracurricular activites, ranging from gymnastics and karate, to baseball, bowling, swimming, track, and of course, basketball and tennis.
Over the past 20 years, Jhett has been blessed with ten grandchildren who lovingly call him "Wowo"--Caden, Ian, Sadies, Jax, Nate, Roro, Penny, Thaeus, Sagan, & EZ. He was not just a loving husband, he was an amazing, supportive father and an even greater grandfather. Although his sports career has led many to consider him a Legend, his greatest feat was being "Wowo" to his grandkids.
