Jesse Show

June 17, 1924 — August 5, 2015

Jesse Show (Cheng Chung Sheu) was born in Anhui, China on June 17, 1924. He graduated top of his class from Chiang Kai-Shek's National Political University in 1945, and was appointed Secretary of the Nationalist Party for WuWei, his native county. He married Janice (Ching Hua) Ting in 1946. In 1948, the year they had their first child, Jane (Shiao Hua), Jesse went to study in the US, as one of the four students selected by national exam to study political science overseas. In 1951 he earned a Masters Degree in History from the University of Missouri. As the rise of Communism precluded his ever returning home, Jesse switched courses, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from UC Berkeley in Civil Engineering in 1955 (also the year of his naturalization). He was then able to obtain the immigration of his wife and daughter Jane in 1956. As he worked, he continued advancing his education, earning his Master of Science Degree in Structural Engineering from USC in 1968. In his 38 year career, he worked for various private companies and eventually the last 22 years as the only dually licensed civil and structural engineer in the district with the US Army Corps of Engineers designing highways, buildings, dams, and bridges. After ten years, he finished his last great work, publishing a four volume best seller analysis of Tang Dynasty poetry at the age of 80 years old. In 2006, Jesse lost his beloved wife of 60 years. He is survived by his three daughters, Jane, Judy, and Joyce, twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, we are requesting that you please make a donation of any amount to the scholarship fund named: "Celestial Seeds."

One of the blessings Dad appreciated most in his life was the opportunity to study in the free boarding schools set up by the Chinese Nationalist government for refugee youth during the tumultuous years of World War II. In lieu of flowers, which Dad made a point of commenting upon in the past as not his opinion of a worthy investment, we respectfully suggest considering contributing in his honor to Celestial Seeds, a scholarship fund created to enable worthy youth without means to study at the Institute of Saints Peter and Paul, a teacher's college in Ghana. A year of scholarship is provided for each year pledged to teach in rural Ghana, to spread the celestial seeds of knowledge, truth, and faith. Father Greg Dongkore, who was Dad's confessor and parish priest, will be leaving St. Bede to his new assignment as director of the Institute of SS Peter and Paul at the end of this month. Checks can be made out to "Celestial Seeds;" any amount is greatly appreciated and will be used to further the cause of the education of disadvantaged youth in Ghana.
