Jean Campbell Brown

Jean Campbell Brown, 102, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2020. She resided in Escondido, CA at the time of her passing. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Glendale, California.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a donation in her name to one of her favorite charities, the Sierra Club, where she was a long-time donor.

Jean was born in Decatur, IL, to Walter and Myrtle Campbell on September 28, 1917. She attended State Preparatory School (later Boulder High). She graduated with honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Following her graduation, she served two and a half years in the women's branch of the United States Naval Reserve—better known as the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service)—during World War II, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. She married William Bartholomew Brown on January 15, 1947 in Los Angeles. She was an English teacher at La Cañada High School from 1963–1977. Prior to that, she taught briefly at La Cañada Elementary School and Foothill Intermediate School.

She was an avid reader and writer, a baseball fan (go Dodgers!), and a prolific painter. She enjoyed needlepointing, the outdoors, hiking, volunteering, and traveling.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Paul Campbell, and her husband. She is survived by her son Russell Brown and daughter-in-law Luanne Brown of Escondido, CA, and two grandchildren: Sarah Brown of Escondido, CA, and William Brown of Grand Rapids, MI.
