Fremont, NH: James Russell McCosh, 84, a former longtime professor of History and Government at Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill, MA, died Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at Exeter Hospital.
Born in Oak Park, Illinois, son of the late Rae Lipton and Helen (Dago) McCosh, he was raised and educated in Cicero, Ill, graduating from Morton High School. He received his Associates Degree in 1951 from Morton Junior College, where he was a member of the Swimming, Tennis and Soccer Teams. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1953 from the University of Illinois, where he was active in the Minawa Lodge. He later received his AB in Divinity in 1956 from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary and was ordained in the Baptist Church. He earned a Master's Degree in History from the University of Illinois in 1963.
Professor McCosh moved to Haverhill in 1970 and began his career at Northern Essex Community College and also served as the faculty advisor to the Model UN. He retired from the college in 1989 and relocated to Cadillac, Michigan, until returning to the area this past year.
A former and longtime active member of The First Baptist Church of Haverhill and a former member of several tennis leagues at Cedardale Health and Athletic Club, he was presently a member of Meauwataka Free Methodist Church of Cadillac.
In his later years, Mr. McCosh enjoyed watching classic movies, taking cruises with family and friends and most recently writing.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by two sons, Jonathan G. McCosh and his wife Kristin of Raymond, NH, and Stephen B. McCosh of Haverhill, a daughter, Kelsey McCosh of Haverhill and grandchildren, Janielle McCosh, Jessalyn McCosh and Jonathan McCosh. He was predeceased by his brother Robert McCosh and his former wife Nina C. (Hansbrough) McCosh.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Life Celebration to be held this Sunday, September 13, 2015, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow, NH. A memorial service will take place on September 27th at 4 p.m. at Raymond Congregational Church, 1 Church St., Raymond, NH.
