James Yun Hae Hwang

July 26, 1937 — April 20, 2026

James Yun Hae Hwang, 88, passed away on April 20, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, California. Born in Pyongyang, North Korea, he journeyed south with his mother and older siblings, leaving behind younger twin brothers and a sister. After his father’s early passing, he stepped quietly into responsibility—not as burden, but as purpose—carrying it with a steadiness that defined his life.

He built a life rooted in devotion to his wife, Ok Sup Hwang, raising three children: Sung-Wook (Nicole), Debbie (William Schwab), and Sung-Mi/Sungalina. His son, Sung-Wook, preceded him in death.

His greatest joy lives on in his grandchildren—Chasity, Luke (U.S. Navy), Jack (U.S. Army), Miles (Harvard), and Noah (ʻIolani School)—a living reflection of a life shaped by his unwavering beliefs. They are able to live with passion and hope because of his sacrifices.

A man of gentle contradictions, he was both an introvert and playfully self-effacing, using humor to bring ease to others. His love was not spoken loudly, but lived—expressed in small, constant acts of care. He anticipated needs before they were named, giving freely, without expectation or measure. In a world that often keeps score, he gave without a ledger.

When his wife became ill, his devotion became ritual—daily visits to the nursing home, home-cooked meals, hours by her side. It was not obligation, but devotion made visible.

His family grieves deeply, but with certainty. He leaves them the enduring gift of a love never withheld, never measured, and never in doubt.
