James Everett De Pena

October 14, 1926 — October 4, 2019

James Everett De Pena, 92, born on October 14, 1926, in New York, passed away October 4, 2019. He enters his heavenly home to join his wife, Jeanie Mae, and eldest son, James De Pena Jr., who preceded him in passing. He is survived by his children Esther De Pena, Wanda Hoffart, Ianthe Norin, Francesca De Pena, and Katon De Pena; his grandchildren Elizabeth Soria, Lauren Hale, Morgan De Pena, Jonas Norin, and Johan Norin; and great-grandchildren Noah Soria, Derek Hale, Grace Hale, Amaya Reyes, Colton Hale, and Josie Hale.
James is a retired Chief Petty Officer Master at Arms serving 30 years in the United States Navy. During his early years of service with the Navy, he discovered his love of boxing and quickly became a renowned member of the All-Navy Boxing Team. While with this team, James, known then in the papers as scowling Jimmy De Pena, won numerous titles and belts including a trip to the 1947 Olympic Trials held in London. His love of physical activity never ceased as he later entered into countless cycling and running races that continued on into his 60's. Upon his retirement from the Navy, James still felt compelled to help his country and his fellow veterans. He did so by starting a career at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach where he worked until retiring in the early 90's.
His later years were devoted to his family, always encouraging them to stay active and volunteer to help those in need in their own way. He and his wife, Jeanie Mae, encouraged their children to be members of scouts, volunteer at hospitals, and be active members of the church. They also made sure that the importance of education was expressed to their children, passing on James's great love of reading and signing the children up for music lessons. This encouragement spread to future generations of their family.
Service was not just a career for James E. De Pena, Sr., it was a mission that paved his way through life. His service and life will live on in the memories of his family and the enduring influence he has left behind. We thank him for a life well lived and well served.
