James R. Chelsea, known affectionately as Jimmy to some and Jim to others, went home to the God he loved on March 18, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by his surviving family and friends.
Born on April 12, 1934, in San Francisco, CA, James led a remarkable life filled with diverse experiences and unwavering dedication to his passions. Graduating from Manual Arts High School in 1952 sparked his lifelong love for tennis, a sport that would become an integral part of his identity. Beyond his academic achievements, James went on to serve his country with honor and distinction for 27 years, first in the Air Force and then in the Army. His time in the military included two tours in Vietnam, working on his beloved Huey and Cobra Helicopters.
Outside of his military service, James excelled in various pursuits. A jack of all trades, he worked as a mechanic but also ventured into driving trucks and semis, moving heavy loads as a contractor. His love for aircraft, especially helicopters, and flying was evident in his conversations with anyone willing to listen. Moreover, he had a passion for tennis that extended beyond the court, where he effortlessly made friends with everyone within an hour of stepping foot onto it.
James's jovial nature and great sense of humor endeared him to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Fondly remembered for his love of strawberry shakes and willingness to help others at every turn, he was a pillar of support for many. Whether sharing stories about the Vietnam War, flying adventures, tennis, or bowling conquests – James was always eager to impart his wisdom and experiences.
In addition to his military service and career, James found joy in simple pleasures like fixing things and participating in bowling leagues throughout his life. His participation in tennis tournaments, earlier in life, showcased both his competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
James had a deep love for God. He was a deacon in his church where he loved singing in the choir. Soon after joining the church, he found his calling mentoring many young men and traveling to conferences and conventions, where his young men won many Bible Bowl competitions.
James is survived by his loving wife Fayola Chelsea; his siblings: brothers, Robert and Kenneth, and sister Barbara Logan; his children: daughters, Esther Chelsea-McCarty, Michelene, Marjory, and Jessie, and son, Aubrey; as well as numerous stepchildren, many nieces and nephews, 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Esther Chelsea, and two wives, Sarah-Jane and Geraldine.
As we bid farewell to James, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life marked by resilience, kindness, faith, and an unwavering passion for the things he loved most. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
