James Steven Abernathy, known by his family and friends as Steve, of Palm Springs, CA died April 13, 2022, at his home surrounded by his beloved family.

Steve was born in Hemet, CA on March 18, 1948 to Mabel Irene (Shope) and James Clintus Abernathy. Steve grew up in the Sungold community in Indio, CA with his sister RoJean, where he graduated from Indio High School. Steve was then drafted and served in The United States Army in Korea during the Vietnam War.

In 1968, he married Michelle Floyd and together they raised three children; Christy, Branden and Ryan. After the two divorced he met and married Leslie Calhoun of Palm Springs, CA.

Steve was the owner of Mirror Works, Inc. since 1976. He had the opportunity of working with some of the deserts best designers, architects, builders and customers. He was able to use his many talents in houses across the valley and even other states. He taught his children the business and they continue to carry on the family tradition.

He had a passion for building and fabricating cars, going fast in any type of vehicle, off road racing, modifying and fabricating most anything and family. A true artist with immeasurable talents. Steve was able to do just about anything that included fabricating, building or any type of home renovation work.

Steve was a loving husband, father, papa and genuine friend to many and would do anything for anyone without hesitation.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie Calhoun, his children Christy McKiel, Branden Abernathy (Korrie Black), Ryan Abernathy, Grandchildren; Connor McKiel, Aspen and Blake Abernathy. Additionally he had two stepchildren, Jeff Calhoun and Kaitlyn Oakes (Bobby), sister RoJean Johnsen (Ken), former spouse Michelle Abernathy and his constant companion dogs, Scout and Cody.

Graveside Services will be held in Cathedral City at Desert Memorial Park on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 9:30 am, with a celebration of life to follow at Los Compadres in Palm Springs, CA.

Steve will be deeply missed leaving an incredible void to all who knew him.
