Hughes Mccoy Huffman

Hughes McCoy Huffman Jr., 73, born on October 28, 1942, in Morganton, North Carolina, passed away August 22, 2016. He resided in Menifee, California at the time of his passing. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Covina, California.

Hughes graduated from Williams High School in Burlington, NC; he received the BMus degree (Vocal Performance) from Wheaton College and obtained the MMus (Vocal Performance and Pedagogy) from Northern Illinois University. He served as director of music at Christ Church of Oak Brook (IL), First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia (NC), Arcadia (CA) Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church of Covina (CA), and La Habra (CA) Presbyterian Church. From 2000 to the present he was the director of music at Christ Lutheran Church, West Covina (CA).

Hughes was on the faculty of Wheaton (IL) Academy in the early 1970's, where he conducted the choirs and taught music history and theory. From 1992-2014 he served as administrative coordinator for the departments of keyboard studies, organ, strings, and vocal arts at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

A singer, choral conductor, and composer, Hughes was the editor of "Hymns II," published by Inter-Varsity Press. His more than fifty published hymns may be found in the hymnals of several denominations.

Mr. Huffman was preceded in death by his sister, Sarah Patricia, and by his parents, Hughes McCoy Huffman, Sr. and Mary Viola Huffman. He is survived by his wife, Debora, his son, J. Marc, and his daughter, Monica.
