Hugh Dee Washburn

March 1, 1946 — February 3, 2023

Hugh Dee Washburn 76, also known as Hugh D. Washburn passed away February 3, 2023 in Westminster, CA. Hugh was born on March 1, 1946 in Kansas City, Mo eventually residing in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA. Hugh Dee is survived by his sister Judy Rogge, brother David Washburn, sister-in-law Karen, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nephews and nieces.

Hugh initially lived in Kansas City, moved to Los Angeles, then Long Beach where he went to Millikan high school. He began his undergraduate studies at California State University Long Beach before transferring to University of Southern California (USC) to complete his Bachelor's Degree studies. After his graduation he worked briefly at General Dynamics before hiring on at Hughes Aircraft Co. During his Hughes employment, he continued his engineering education at USC. In March 1977 he obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering with the subject of his PhD dissertation being "Multistage Estimation and State Space Layered Media Models." He received USC's Phi Kappa Phi's highest award as the Outstanding PhD graduate. Hugh also briefly taught engineering classes at USC. Hugh ended his career with Raytheon Co. Upon his retirement, Hugh spent time golfing (even winning a first place trophy), consulting at Raytheon, doing crossword puzzles, listening to music, home projects, internet surfing and spending time with his beloved family. Hugh had an enjoyable witty sense of humor that all loved about him. He was kind, thoughtful, funny, honest, and sincere. He loved to thoughtfully research and provide special Christmas presents for each member of his large family. His big personality and entertaining stories will be greatly missed, but they will live on through all of those who were lucky enough to know and love him.

He will be missed.
