Hilda Bio

May 9, 1938 — April 10, 2023

Hilda Bio was a cherished mother, wife, grandmother, and friend. To the family and friends she held dear, Hilda had a gentle soul, and would always care for her loved ones no matter what circumstance. She showed kindness to all walks of life. Whether you knew her as Mom, Grandma, or Hilda, her welcoming demeanor and loving personality won the hearts of many who met her.

Hilda was born on May 9, 1938, in the small town of Malinao in the city of Albay, in the province of Bicol, to Leonore Imperial and Jesus Melgar. She had three siblings: Olga, Eddie, and Jesus Jr.

Hilda went to an all-girls catholic school for early education. She was a devout catholic and closely followed the teachings of God throughout her life. For higher education, she attended the Philippine Women’s University to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, while also having interest in Cosmetology.

Hilda was a hard worker. She was an entrepreneur and small business owner in the Philippines. She owned a beauty salon and a sari-sari store (a grassroots convenience store) for multiple years. She was active in the Ladies Circle in the Emapalico community, volunteering her time with church functions and events.

Hilda first met the love of her life, Domingo, in a pharmacy where she worked as a store clerk. It was love at first sight! Hilda married Domingo on December 11th, 1958. They shared a loving and fulfilling marriage that lasted 64 years. They were blessed with five children: Noel, Lito, Gilbert, Joey, and Jennifer. Hilda was devoted to her family, passing along her knowledge and experiences to her children with love and care.

In 1985, Hilda immigrated to the United States with her husband and two children, Joey and Jennifer. Her mother encouraged Hilda and her family to join her in America and after 20 years of waiting, she was finally able to make it to America. In the United States, she held three jobs for many years. She was a counselor for high functioning adults at Home of Guiding Hands for over 30 years. She showed the same consideration and love for her family to those in need. Her friends and co-workers admired her stamina and drive to financially support her family.

Her time in America was initially difficult, but life improved with Domingo and Hilda’s perseverance, teamwork and assistance from their friends and co-workers.

Years later, Hilda and Domingo were joined by their other two children, Gilbert and Lito along with their families. Hilda and her husband’s journey to America was challenging, but they were determined to secure better lives for their children and future generations.

Hilda has many passions in life such as caring for animals and creating clothing and accessories. When family and friends would get together, Hilda shared what new species of birds would visit around her home in Menifee, California. She kept a journal of what feathered friends she met, and cared for the birds with feeders and shelters. Hilda also loved cats, namely Sweepy, a naughty, short-haired, orange cat. At one point in her life, Hilda used to have about 20 cats in her home in Las Piñas, Philippines. Hilda enjoyed knitting hats and creating beaded bracelets for her friends and family to proudly wear. Hilda also loved to read the Bible.

Hilda also loved to travel. She spent time with her son Joey in Thailand. She visited Canada, New York, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Washington D.C. She also traveled back to the Philippines to visit family.

Although Hilda was extremely busy with work and caring for her family, she always made time for her friends. Her friends often called her “The life of the party”; she was very lively with many funny stories and jokes. During difficult times, she was devoted to her friends’ well-being. Hilda helped them find employment, gave relationship advice, and provided guidance on how to deal with life’s tough moments. Hilda enjoyed life-long friendships, and was a best friend, a sister or “Kumare” to many people.

Hilda was a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother, and friend. Her strength to combat cancer and care for her family are an inspiration to all. While Hilda may have passed onto the kingdom of Heaven, she remains a guiding presence for her family. Her teachings and love continue to be a radiant light to guide her loved ones through life’s challenges. We will continue to celebrate her love and legacy throughout our lives; to give us the strength to continue forward. Hilda is survived by her dear friends, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hilda and her loved ones were blessed to have one another in each other’s lives. She will be greatly missed.
