Henry Michael Normoyle, known affectionately as Mike, departed this life on August 17, 2026, at Los Alamitos Medical Center, closing a remarkable chapter that began on Staten Island, New York, in 1935. Mike’s journey, spanning over nine decades, is a tapestry woven with service, family, dedication, and the subtle warmth of a dry sense of humor known to all who loved him.

Born on the shores of Staten Island, Mike’s early years hinted at the steadfastness that would define his life. He pursued higher education, earning an Associate’s degree at Junior College—an achievement that spoke to his commitment to personal growth and learning. This dedication took root not only in his academic pursuits but formed the backbone of a career marked by honor and distinction.

Service ran through Mike's veins. He first worked as a bank clerk at Chase National Bank, but it was the United States Navy where he found his purpose. Over an extraordinary 30-year career, Mike rose to the prestigious rank of Yeoman Command Master Chief (YNCM), a reflection of his unwavering discipline and capacity to lead. His assignments took him from Red Bank, New Jersey, and Quincy, Massachusetts, to Subic Bay in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Long Beach, California. His courage and loyalty were recognized by numerous commendations: the Navy Achievement Medal with a Gold Star, 3 Gold Stars in all, the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal Seventh Award, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (including Korea), the Humanitarian Service Medal, and an array of distinctions for service in Vietnam, including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross and Campaign Medal.

Dedicated not just to duty but to the people around him, Mike’s natural inclination was to lift up those in his sphere. After his illustrious Navy career, he shared his knowledge as a computer repair instructor at ABC Schools, relishing the chance to guide a new generation. It was this generous spirit that endeared him to colleagues, friends, and family alike.

Family was the anchor in Mike’s life. Surviving him are his sons Michael, William, Steven, and Mark, his daughters Kathleen and Karen, and his stepdaughter Rebecca. The love and pride he held for his grandchildren, Don, Cheryl, Austin, and Crystal, were matched only by the fondness he felt for his niece's Debbie, Shimmi, Mary Lou & Susan and his sister Judy Ann including several nephews. He cherished his relationships and cultivated affection across generations, drawing joy from each connection.

Mike’s life was marked by both the grace of loving companionship and the ache of loss. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley and ex-wife Agnes, his sister Mary Lou, and his brothers Frank and Joe and parents Frank & Elenor. Their memories lived on in his stories, resonating in the family gatherings he held dear.

Though disciplined by vocation and service, Mike reveled in the simple pleasures. Genealogy captured his curiosity for hours on end, as he traced lineage and origin, threading the past into the present. In earlier days, he found solace in woodworking—the measured patience of working with his hands bringing him quiet contentment. Even at 90 years old, Mike’s independence was undiminished. He continued to live on his own, drove himself everywhere, and began each day with a visit to his favorite breakfast cafe. Social by nature, he was a familiar face at group dinners two or three times a week and always eager to help out with computer repairs, sharing his expertise and time without hesitation.

To those nearest to him, Mike was a man of generosity and heart, with a wit that delighted and a perspective shaped by both his devotion to country and keen observation of the world—never missing a segment on Fox News or the History Channel. Proudly rooted in his beloved “Normoyle” humor, he brought laughter and guidance in equal measure.

Family, friends, and all whose lives Mike touched are invited to pay their respects at a visitation on September 1, 2026, at Forest Lawn - Cypress, 4471 Lincoln Avenue, Cypress, CA, beginning at 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow on September 2, 2026, at the Church of Our Fathers at the same location, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
