Obituary: Henry Walter Hurd
Henry Walter Hurd, 81, passed away on May 14, 2023, in Thousand Oaks, California. He was born on June 9, 1941, in Pasadena, California to Glenn and Martha Hurd. Henry was an intelligent, friendly, and caring person who helped countless people during his lifetime. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.
Henry attended Eugene Field Elementary School and Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, California, and later graduated from California State University, Northridge. He served in the Coast Guard Reserves from 1964 to 1971.
Henry worked for the Los Angeles Department of Public Works (1965-1966). Henry then worked for the Personnel Department (1966-2000). Henry was the Employee Benefits Administrator for Los Angeles from 1975 until 2000. Henry was awarded the 1996 Career Service Award by the LA City Council and served as the President of LA City Employees' Retirement System "LACERS" from 1987-1988 and 1991-1992. He was also a member of the Board of Deferred Compensation Administration from 1988 to 1992.
In his free time, Henry was an avid sports car enthusiast who loved Formula 1 racing, artwork, and collected scale model cars. He also enjoyed college football, especially the UCLA Bruins.
The public viewing for Henry will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, from 10 AM until 7 PM at Forest Lawn of Glendale. The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023, for family and friends. The graveside will be for family members only. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the charity of your choice. Henry was a big supporter of the AIDS LA foundation and the North Hollywood LGBTQ center.
Henry is survived by his sister Sally Kniseley, brother-in-law Karl Kniseley II, niece Karen Hampson, nephew Karl Kniseley III, nephew Michael Kniseley, and niece Ann Rarang. He was preceded in death by his father Glenn Hurd, mother Martha Hurd, grandfather Claude Alexander, grandmother Hazel Alexander, grandfather Walter Hurd, and grandmother Mabel Hurd.
