Henry C. Guillermo’s life, all 69 years of it, tells the story of a simple man who genuinely loved life and lived it enormously.
Henry was born on October 19, 1953 to Peter Guillermo and Victoria Cacal in Bobon, Burgos, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. He was Ading to Angel and Edmund, and Manong to Marivic and Jackie. His childhood and young adulthood were rich with stories of his rambunctious nature and carefree disposition.
In 2002, Henry immigrated to the United States, and was later joined by his family. Like many immigrants, he worked harder than most to provide his family with the American dream. He was not driven by a lot of ambitions for himself, except for his dream that all his children get degrees and live comfortable lives. By the end of 2023, all of his children will be double degree holders, all professionals in the fields of Psychology and Nursing.
Henry expressed great pride in working as a Metro bus driver, a career he dedicatedly held for 17 years. To him, it was not just a job. It nurtured his natural ability to get along with people from all walks of life. It was his joy to meet people and he thrived in their presence. Through this career, he solidified friendships that he cherished until the end.
Battling lymphoma cancer for almost 9 years did not break Henry’s spirit. He remained hopeful and gracious. When cancer limited his world, he refused to be discouraged. His great appreciation for food provided him some relief during the difficult days. Even in sickness, even in pain, he remained funny. He immersed himself in his love of music and basketball, cultivated his cultural and historical curiosity through documentaries, attempted to learn about new technology, and even kept up with the tsismis.
When the time came, he was ready. Henry passed away peacefully in his Los Angeles home on May 20, 2023, surrounded by his family.
Henry will best be remembered as a dedicated family man: a devoted husband to Florie; a supportive father to Polen, JP, and JH; and a doting grandfather to Bryx. His cheerful and easygoing personality, his exuberant presence, and his effortless humor will be deeply missed.
