Harry E. Taylor, Sr., 91 of Haverhill, formerly of Epping, NH passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Penacook Nursing Home in Haverhill, MA.
Harry was born on March 18, 1923 at what is now the Brooks School in No. Andover, MA the son of the late Harry E. and Blanche (Taylor) Taylor. His family moved to the Governor Bass Estate in Peterborough, NH until the death of his father. Following his father's death, the family moved to Methuen, MA where Harry attended Methuen Schools and graduated from the Tenney High School, Class of 1941. He attended the University of New Hampshire for a short time before leaving to enlist in the U.S. Army early into WWII. In the Army, Harry served with Company B, 384th Military Police. After the war he was honorably discharged and returned home to Methuen. Shortly after returning home, Harry met his wife of 62 years, Velma. Harry and Velma moved to Haverhill, MA, where they raised their five children.
Harry had worked for Watts Regulator Company in Lawrence, MA for 25 years. He later worked for the Metal Flake Company of Haverhill, where he retired. Following his retirement, He and Velma moved to Maine where Harry accepted his dream job working for the White Mountain National Forestry Service.
He loved the outdoors and especially trapping, hunting and fishing. He loved to take his family camping. At the age of 12, Harry joined the Boy Scouts. He was proud to become the first Eagle Scout of Troop 53 in Methuen, MA. Harry always tried to live up to the Scout oath and law and remained active in Scouting until he was into his late 80's.
Harry was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Velma K. (Parker) Taylor. He is survived by his 3 daughters, Maryellen Pelletier and husband, Rick of Plaistow, NH, Robin E. Dame of Londonderry, NH and B. Jill Senter and husband, Buck of Plaistow, NH. His 2 sons, Harry E. Taylor, Jr. and wife, Janice Bryant of Haverhill, MA and Arthur H. Taylor and wife, Gillian of Beaufort, SC. His 2 brothers-in-law, Arthur Parker of Fayetteville, NC and James Parker of Lawrence, MA. 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, 3 nieces, 1 nephew and several cousins also survive him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Harry's calling hours and Life Celebration on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 from 4 – 8 PM at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street (Rt. 121A), Plaistow, NH 03865. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at the First Baptist Church, 122 Main Street (Rt. 121A), Plaistow, NH 03865. An hour of visiting will take place from 1 – 2 PM with the service to follow at 2:15 PM. At the request of the family, a private burial will take place on Saturday, September 20, 2014.
