Harlan was a bright light in many lives. Being the son of an Army officer, Major Harlan Eyre and wife, Helenruth Eyre, he was provided many opportunities and adventures both at home and abroad. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, then spent much of his childhood in Japan and Germany.
Harlan and his family traveled to many countries in Asia and Europe. As a teen he became a popular disc jockey on Armed Forces Network Europe. His listenership and popularity was stellar and he developed friends for life, public speaking and performance skills. Harlan completed high school and graduated from Junipero High School Class of 1963.
During this time Harlan was a student body leader and academic achiever. He played lead roles in Gilbert and Sullivan productions, Civic Light Operas and musicals. After attending classes at Monterey Peninsula College, Harlan was provided a full scholarship to UCLA where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts and Theatre. He was chosen for a Carol Burnett Award for performance in Musical Theater and an internship with 20th Century Fox.
Harlan left Los Angeles in 1969 and entered the business sector working first for Dun & Bradstreet in San Francisco, CA and later developed a long career at Boeing-McDonnel Douglas in Long Beach, CA. During the 1980's Harlan earned his Master's Degree in Leadership and Organizational Behavior at Fielding University and later, national certification as a Life Coach.
Harlan created a strong record of leadership for social justice and art initiatives. He competed as a bowling finalist at the National Gay Games, performed in theater and chorus productions and served on non- profit boards.
Harlan is survived by scored of dear friends and loving family member including sisters Cynthia Schelcher (George) and Patricia Bergmann (Thomas), nieces Erin Schelcher, Michelle Vartan (Robert), Kristen Bath (Amrit), nephews: Grant Schelcher, Cmdr. Michael Schelcher (Ashley), and grandnieces Lorelai Schelcher, Genevieve Schelcher, Anna Vartan and Ruth Vartan.
A funeral mass is scheduled for September 28, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Saint Anthony Catholic Church, 5770 N. Maroa Avenue, Fresno, CA. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, 264 Blyth Avenue, Fresno, CA.
