Rev. Dr. Hanson Wong

December 8, 1959 — November 30, 2024

Dr Hanson Wong was born on December 8, 1959 in Hong Kong to a family of 8, being the youngest of six children. He was a hard working and brilliant child. He always exceled in all that he participated in. He studied in La Salle College, one of the best high schools in Hong Kong. He represented his school to enter a city wide Open Bible Reading competition and won first prize. The judges commented that they were touched by his emotional expression that captured the spirit of the verses. In an interview with the local newspaper, Hansen Wong said, “You must put yourself into the story, and take it for granted that you are the author. He graduated from Cal State Fullerton as top of the graduating class. He received three awards upon his graduation. He was admitted to UCLA medical school with a full scholarship. He finished the four years of medical school in three and a half years and used the last semester to go overseas for mission work. Then he started his medical practice in the Los Angeles area.

He became a Christian at a young age. His faith guided him in all of his life’s major decisions. The love of God and His Mission were always forefront in his life.

When he was young, he suffered some mysterious pain all over his body. As a result, he determined to study pain management to cure everyone’s pain and suffering. So upon finishing medical school, he sought to be triple board certified in internal medicine, pain management, and pediatrics. He also became a naturopath.

In his medical practice, he had helped thousands of patients and became friends to many. He would take every opportunity to share the gospel with his patients. On the practical side, if the patients could not afford to pay, he would treat them for free and give them medicine, supplements, and other things they need. Many consider him Santa Claus.

That is how he would introduce himself:

“I am handsome Wong. I was born in Hong Kong. I love ding dong. I eat like King Kong. I love to sing songs.”

He finished three years of law school but did not take the bar exam. He then went to seminary and became a pastor as he continued his medical practice. He started and pastored the Grace Mission Church International (GMCI) as a volunteer. He was well loved as a pastor. The ministry grew under his pastoral leadership with his powerful preaching and his caring ministries. He also helped the church bought a building. Pastor William Zheng succeeded Dr. Wong as the new pastor of GMCI.

During the pandemic, he hosted regular health seminars and gave away medicine, supplements, and whatever his congregants needed. He was so proud that in his church, during the pandemic, there was no covid death.

He was a prayer warrior and he always invited people to fast and pray when necessary. It happened regularly. In particular when his brother Anthony and his mother were ill, he rallied his church to pray for them. When his father was ill, he picked him up in time to send him to his cardiologist friend. The cardiologist commented that if Hanson did not act quickly, his father would have died. Because of his quick action, His father lived on another 20 years.

If medicine is his career, then medical mission is his passion. He went to medical mission in over 100 countries. With the fund he raised from church, he started orphanages, hospitals, and sponsored and trained local doctors in pain management in many countries, including Mongolia, China, India, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Moldova, and Congo and many countries in Africa. He had treated over 100,000 patients in these countries. He built schools, managed farmland, and built water wells.

One time, he attended a Christian conference in San Diego and was instantly attracted to the pianist on the platform. In time, that lady, Crystal, became his first wife. They bore three lovely children, Percy, Pauline, and Hanson Jr. Hanson was very proud of his three children and their accomplishment.

In his spare time, he loves deep sea fishing. He loves to play ping pong. He always enjoys a good bbq and buffet. He enjoys singing and wrote many songs. He loved to use the tune of pop songs and put in Christian lyrics.

He was a gentle soul with a broad shoulder. He was always joyful. One of his life’s goals is to give people peace. He was not competitive and had a tender heart. Table fellowship gave him much joy. He always enjoy good food with many friends. One of his favorite dishes is curry beef soup.

From his beloved wife, “He is my role model. His fear of the Lord is so evident. In all major decisions he had to make in these past two years, he always said he had to pray for three days to seek the Lord. He was a gentle soul. He looks forward to that day where he comes before his Lord and Savior and hear these word: “Well done, my good and faithful servant, You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!” (Matthew 25:23)

He lived up to the saying: I live a simple life so others can simply live.

As Paul told Timothy, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:6-8) This summarized the life of Rev. Dr. Hanson Wong.

He passed away peacefully on November 30, at UCLA medical center, surrounded by family and close friends. We know that he is resting in eternal peace in the presence of His Lord and Savior. He has received his heavenly reward. He will be dearly missed.

His memorial service will be held at 3 pm, December 14, Saturday, 2024 at the First Church of the Nazarene of Pasadena, 3700 East Sierra Madre Boulevard, Pasadena, California 91107.

The service will be livestreamed at this link: paz.nz/live.

First Church of the Nazarene of Pasadena 舉行, 地址: 3700 East Sierra Madre Boulevard, Pasadena, California 91107。

屆時會有直播,連結: paz.nz/live。
