Gun Young Kim

September 24, 1938 — October 19, 2021

Dr. Gun Young Kim, a first generation Korean American of Los Angeles, California, returned home to be with the Lord after a long battle with metastatic cancer on October 19th, 2021. He passed away peacefully at home, at the age of 83, and was surrounded by family.

Dr. Kim was born on September 24th, 1938, in Seoul, Korea to Kim Jin Ok and Han Ban Soon as the fourth child out of eight children. His siblings now reside in Korea, China and Canada. Before his passing he recently shared that he has fond memories of growing up with his siblings while in Korea as a child and was well taken care of by them.

As a studious young man, he attended Korea University, and graduated from Korea University Medical School in 1964. Shortly after for the next 3 years he served in the Army and earned the title as Captain. He was honorably discharged in 1967. In 1969, he married the love of his life, Sook Ja Choi, and was happily married for 52 years. He completed his Residency in Gynecology and Obstetrics and had the blessing of delivering his first-born son in 1970. They have two children Lucy and Bobby (Ana), and two grandsons, Caden and Colin, and are expecting a granddaughter due next year.

They immigrated to the United States in 1971, and planted their roots in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Grand Blanc became home for Dr. Kim and his family for the next 25 years. He completed his fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology and worked as an Anesthesiologist at Hurley Medical Center of Flint. He was highly respected for his astounding hard work, discipline and dedication.
In addition to his devotion as a health care provider, he was even more devoted to his faith as a Christian. Dr. Kim was one of the founders of the First Presbyterian Church of Flint, where he served as an Elder and he was instrumental in growing the church spiritually. He also loved playing tennis and golf.

After 25 years at Hurley Hospital, they left for Alma, Michigan. For the next 15 years, he worked at Gratiot Medical Center, a smaller community hospital, which helped him transition into his retirement at the age of 75. To fully enjoy his retirement, he moved with his wife to Los Angeles, California to be closer to their daughter and enjoy the warmer weather.

Dr. Kim and Sook Ja became involved with Young Nak Church of Los Angeles, spending time with friends, traveling, and golfing. They enjoyed their time the most with their children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his 2 older brothers, Kim Young Duk and Kim Young Hwa.
