Gonzalo Velasco

November 2, 1942 — August 27, 2025

Gonzalo Velasco, affectionately as Al, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, in Paramount, California, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family. He was born on November 2, 1942, in Ternate, Cavite, Philippines, and he lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication.

Al was a man of many talents and passions. He graduated from the University of Manila with a degree in Education and embarked on a journey that took him from teaching in the Philippines to serving as a Bureau of Internal Revenue agent before arriving in America in the mid-1970s. He embraced various occupations during his career, ultimately retiring as a security officer at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. His commitment to his work echoed his enduring love for family, as he always strived to ensure a better future for his children.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Al was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He had three children: Rainier, April, and Sandra, from his first wife, Evelyn; daughters Gaygay and Gemma from his second wife, Juanita; and two daughters, Angel and Allena, with his third and beloved wife, Shirley, who sadly passed away in June 2010. He also embraced a blended family with open arms, welcoming children Tammy, Chris, Russell, Sam, Laywayway, and Noel into his heart. His legacy is carried on by his numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he cherished deeply and enjoyed spoiling with love and gifts.

Al was known for his wonderful sense of humor and playfulness. He had a special talent for making others laugh and would often be seen telling stories that brought joy to those around him, even if some tales were a bit questionable. His personality shone brightly; he was loving and silly, always ready to bring a smile to the faces of his loved ones. Music was another profound passion, as he delighted in dancing and singing, finding happiness in melodies that lifted spirits and created cherished memories. Family outings and vacations, particularly trips to Knotts Berry Farm, were moments he savored, crafting lasting bonds with his children and grandchildren.

A dedicated spiritual individual, Al diligently prayed every day, grounding himself in faith and gratitude. He was the seventh of ten children born to Dr. Benjamin Velasco and Mercedes Sendiong Velasco and is survived by three siblings—Leno, Ching, and Julieta. He created countless memories with those he held dear.

As we remember Gonzalo Velasco's life, we celebrate the love he shared and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of everyone he encountered. His proudest accomplishments were rooted in family, the way he shaped his children’s adult lives, and the strong bonds he forged among his blended family. His affection for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren is a testament to the joy he found in family, where his spirit will always reside.
