Gloria Mittry, 93, born on August 19, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY, United States, passed away October 22, 2025. She resided in Woodland Hills, CA at the time of her passing. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Glendale, CA.
Cherished, dedicated, and loving wife, mother and grandmother, Gloria Helen Mittry passed away peacefully at her home in Woodland Hills, CA on October 22, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. The daughter of Nicholas and Victoria Azal, Gloria was born the 19th of August 1932 in Brooklyn, New York. She married Ameen (‘Babe’) S. Mittry on July 31, 1953, in the beautiful Pocono Mountains. Gloria attended school in New York where in her collegiate high school she excelled academically, as well as being a star athlete. A true New Yorker through and through, Gloria aspired to be a Radio City Rockette; however, her sweet ‘old country’ parents did not see that as something a ‘respectable’ girl should do. In addition to her academic and athletic achievements, Gloria had an incredible esthetic sense and natural artistic talent. She adored fashion, and after spending some time modeling, she studied and became a fashion illustrator working on 5th Avenue for stores such as Bonwit Teller.
Upon a visit to sunny California to visit her uncle she fell in love with the weather, the palm trees, and shortly thereafter, a young man. After marrying, they moved to Fort Collins Colorado. A few years later, they moved back to California to the San Fernando Valley where they built their life until the end of their days. Gloria’s esthetic sense and talent was evident in everything she did. Together with her husband, she built a renowned business: Mittry’s Art Gallery, Picture Framing, and Interior Decorating which was in the San Fernando Valley for over 47 years. Gloria loved to entertain and have family and friends to her home, which she truly enjoyed. She generously opened her home to everyone as a place to feel loved, to find refuge, and for celebration of any and all occasions. She made every event and holiday special and beautiful with her own unique flair. She LOVED flowers and worked tirelessly to keep her home and yard filled with them year-round.
Gloria had a zest for life and said in her last days, “I have no bucket list”. She traveled the country and the world with friends and family. She had a vast social circle and was involved in numerous large charities and organizations where she would again bring her own special flair, endless generosity, time and devotion.
Gloria would say, “God-Family-Country” – life lived in that order and truly loved Jesus with her whole heart. Gloria and her husband were among the original founders of St. Michael Antiochian Orthodox Church in Van Nuys, CA which was established in 1969. Gloria’s love for St. Michael’s was reflected in her dedication to honoring God through her exceptional work, devotion, support and service to the church until the last days of her life. Gloria loved her church family and was Godmother to many. She warmly welcomed every new parishioner and joyfully celebrated the birth of every new baby.
Gloria loved and, in turn, was deeply loved. She did everything with passion \ and has been described as ‘a force,’ ‘fierce’, and ‘one of a kind’. She is unforgettable and will be greatly missed. She is survived, and loved, by her brother, George Azal, son, Craig Mittry, daughter, Lisa Mittry Conway (husband, John), grandson, Matthew Mittry (wife, Hannah).
