Glenn W. Smith, 88, a resident of Plaistow for the last forty-six years, died Thursday evening, May 7, at Boston Medical Center, from injuries he received in an automobile accident in Newton, NH, earlier in the week.
Born in Wakefield, MA, and raised and educated in Malden, he was a member of the Malden High School Class of 1944. A member of The Greatest Generation, he served in the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre of the U.S. Navy during W.W. II. He later served as a Police Sergeant for the Malden Police Department from 1946 until a plane he was piloting in Maine crashed in the Biddeford area in 1967 ending his law enforcement career.
Mr. Smith worked as a part-time animal control office for the Town of Plaistow after moving here in 1969, and he also constructed and sold furniture under the name of Hancock Pine for several years. In 1981 he established Pulsar Alarm Systems in Plaistow and served as owner and operator until he sold the business in 1993 and became a mentor and advisor to the new owner.
He was an accomplished musician with perfect pitch, proficient at guitar, banjo, piano and the harmonica. He also owned and maintained a home on Lake Attitash for many years, enjoying boating and slalom skiing and was the owner of the first fiberglass boat on the lake. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and solving crossword puzzles.
His beloved wife of sixty-five years, Jean L. (Donovan) Smith, followed him in death on May 8 at the Boston Medical Center.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Maryann S. and Aaron Little of Plaistow, a sister Hazel J. Orchard of North Andover, three grandchildren, Mylee, Chase and Benjamin Smith of Plaistow and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Life Celebration on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. The funeral for Mr. & Mrs. Smith will be held on Wednesday at 10a.m. in the funeral home followed by burial in in Locust Grove Cemetery, Merrimac, MA.
