It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gilbert John Scholtz (born Gijsbertus Johanus Scholtz), a visionary engineer, devoted father, and passionate outdoorsman, who passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2026, following complications from kidney failure.
Gilbert was born in Salatiga, Indonesia, to the late George Wilhelm Scholtz and Johanna Gisbertine Douwes. His remarkable journey eventually led him to the United States, where he built an extraordinary life and career. In 1969, he joined Walt Disney Imagineering, dedicating 32 years as a cornerstone of the company’s creative and engineering divisions. A gifted inventor, Gilbert’s legacy lives on through numerous patents that revolutionized theme park ride mechanics and special effects cinematography—helping create the magic experienced by millions around the world.
Beyond his professional achievements, Gilbert found his greatest joy in the outdoors. An avid sportsman, he relished hiking, boating, and hunting, but fishing was his true passion. He was never more content than when he was out on the lake, fishing the quiet waters he loved most.
Gilbert was the proud patriarch of a large and loving family. He is survived by his three children—Michelle, Jonathan, and Timothy—along with his daughter-in-laws and son-in-law, all of whom he loved as his own. His legacy continues through his seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of his life. He is also survived by his brother, David, and his sister, Rebecca.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his older brother Ronald; his brother Lucas; and his sister Lucile.
Gilbert will be remembered as a man of profound intellect, quiet strength, and unwavering curiosity—an Imagineer who spent his life building dreams for others while never losing his deep appreciation for the simple beauty of nature. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, whose lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and quiet strength.
He resided in Chino, CA at the time of his passing. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Covina Hills, CA.
