Geraldine Koon

February 14, 1942 — May 22, 2026

Geraldine Koon, lovingly known as Geri, passed away peacefully at her home in Highland, on May 22, 2026. Born on February 14, 1942, in Gloucester City, Geri’s vibrant and joyful spirit enriched the lives of all who knew her. Her unwavering love for family and her warm zest for life will forever be cherished by those fortunate enough to share in her journey.

Geri’s life was a beautiful love story centered around family, devotion, and perseverance. She met the love of her life, James Koon Sr., on a blind date, and their connection was immediate. Their first kiss took place atop a Ferris wheel in Long Beach, a memory they treasured throughout their 65 years of marriage. So certain was their love that they married only six weeks later, and in a story she often laughed about, Geri did not even know James’ last name until the night before their wedding. Together they built a loving home and raised three children, whom Geri devoted herself to wholeheartedly. She was the heart of the household — always cooking, cleaning, caring for her family, and making sure everyone around her felt loved and supported. Whether preparing meals from scratch, keeping traditions alive, or offering comfort and encouragement, Geri gave endlessly of herself to those she loved.

For 35 dedicated years, Geraldine served as a teacher’s assistant in the Ontario-Montclair School District, where her kindness, patience, and warmth left an indelible mark on generations of students. She had a natural gift for working with children and was known for making every student feel seen, encouraged, and important. Teachers and families appreciated her calming presence, strong work ethic, and nurturing spirit. She took pride in helping young learners grow both academically and emotionally, and her classrooms were always filled with warmth, laughter, and care. Even after long days at work, Geri still poured her energy into her family, balancing her career and home life with remarkable strength and dedication.

She was immensely proud of her family, whose achievements and happiness were a constant source of joy for her. The warmth of her home was felt most deeply during the holidays, especially Christmas, when she lovingly planned celebrations that brought everyone together. The magic of the season was made even more special by her cherished tradition of having Santa visit to delight her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with gifts. Geri’s home was a haven of love, laughter, and treasured memories. Her famous homemade macaroni and cheese and peanut butter fudge remain fond memories for all who tasted them.

Geri’s passion for life extended to her enjoyment of vacations, lively casino trips, and time spent as an avid bingo player, reflecting her spirited love for adventure and shared experiences. She embraced every gathering with happiness and enthusiasm, always ready to create new memories and savor the company of family and friends. Her playful heart found particular joy in time spent with her grandchildren, relishing moments of connection, laughter, and fun.

Her family legacy is lovingly carried on by her devoted husband of 65 years, James Koon Sr.; her children, Donna Provencher and husband Randy, James Koon Jr. and wife Anna, and Johanna Hurd and husband Ken; seven cherished grandchildren — Randy Jr., Samantha, Ryan, Richard, Kayla, Christina, and Kelsey; and ten treasured great-grandchildren — Riley, Ricky, Lana, Ryan, Bennett, Tatum, Reed, Brooks, Kaisen, and Weslie — who each carried forward her spirit, love, and joy.

Geraldine fought a long and difficult battle with shingles beginning in May 2025, displaying remarkable resilience and courage through her final days. For much of her life, she also lived with rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition she battled from her early twenties onward. Through decades of painful flare-ups and physical challenges, Geri faced each hardship with extraordinary strength, determination, and grace, rarely allowing her struggles to overshadow the love and care she gave to others. Even during difficult times, she remained devoted to her family, her work, and the people she cherished most. She faced her final illness with the same courage and resilience that defined her life. Surrounded by the love of her family, she passed peacefully at home on May 22, 2026.

A funeral service honoring Geraldine’s remarkable life will be held on June 9, 2026, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at Forest Lawn - Covina Hills - Church of Our Heritage. A reception will follow at 5:30 PM at San Manuel Village Event Center.

Geraldine Koon’s legacy is one of devotion, joy, and the profound happiness found in family, traditions, and life’s simple moments. Her enduring pride in her loved ones created a foundation of warmth and unity that will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
