Gerald Alan Hogevoll

October 19, 1947 — March 17, 2017

Gerald Alan Hogevoll (Jerry or "Hogy"), a self-storage developer of Salem, Ore., passed away unexpectedly on March 17, 2017 at the age of 69 while wintering in Indian Wells, Calif. Jerry is survived by his wife, Darlene Lacy-Hogevoll of Salem; his daughter Brandi and her husband Jake of Puyallup, Wash.; his grandson, Tanner Ulrey of Whidbey Island, Wash.; and his granddaughter, Mckennah Ulrey of Puyallup. He is also survived by his brothers Ben Hogevoll of Siletz and Rodney Hogevoll of Creswell; sisters, Kristina Hogevoll of Sherwood, Carol Leek of Keizer, Ore., Glenna Plummer of Midland, Texas, and Debra Davis of Silverton, Ore. He is predeceased by his father, Jack Hogevoll; his mother, Louise Hughes; and his sister, Traci Hogevoll. He was born October 19, 1947 in Albany, Ore., to Jack and Louise Hogevoll. He is a graduate of McMinnville High School, class of 1965, where he was a Varsity wrestler. He started out as a Strawberry Picker in Oregon and surpassed even his wildest dreams. After graduating from Glendale College on a wrestling scholarship, he began his career as a graphic designer. He worked for several local newspapers in their advertising departments. He later started his own advertising agency, The Art Department, out of his basement which included several national accounts. He expanded his print business to include video production as well, and eventually acquired his first self-storage facility and advertising office in South Salem in 1979. He ran the agency for years, earning multiple design awards and industry recognition. He went on to develop storage facilities in both Oregon and Washington. Self-storage eventually became his primary focus, and he found a true calling in property development and building businesses. He worked side by side with his daughter, teaching her the business and making sure she kept her sense of humor while she learned. Jerry was a Masters Champion bodybuilder many times over. He held numerous Bodybuilder Titles. He wrote two books, "Fit Over 50" and "The Fitness Revolution." His home gyms are full of 1st place Trophies and awards. He took great pride in his ability to help others achieve their fitness goals, and he was still actively competing in his 60's. As an avid golfer, a successful round could set his mood for the day. A less than stellar round, however, meant that his best friend and golfing buddy, Chris Martin, probably cheated. Hogy and Martin knew it wasn't football season until point spreads had been researched, wagers had been made between the two, and the gloating was done. A classic Jaguar aficionado, he had an extensive Jaguar collection. He always had at least two or three projects going at once. He never tired of finding cars that were in need of TLC, and creating something beautiful and unique where there had been rust and disrepair. He married his beautiful wife, Darlene, "Wolfie," on June 28, 2001. Theirs was the special love that Jerry had been waiting for all his life. Friends and family will be invited to attend a Celebration of Life at the Illahe Country Club, 3376 Country Club Drive, Salem, OR 97302; on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn Cathedral City.
