Georgine Hughes Pechin

March 26, 1915 — June 11, 2013

Ethel Georgine Hughes Pechin, age 98, died peacefully on June 11, 2013 in Golden Years Board and Care of Sherman Oaks, California.

Georgine was born in Montclair, New Jersey on March 15, 1915, the fifth of six children of George Clemens Hughes and Ethel McNeal Hughes. She was married for twenty-three years to Edward Johnson Pechin of Wilmington, Delaware and Hana, Maui.

She is survived by two of her five children, Christopher Hughes Pechin of Studio City, California, and Nicholas Hunter Pechin of Honolulu, Hawaii.
She was pre-deceased by three other children: Edward Johnson Pechin Jr.; Margaret Pechin Powell; and George Hughes Pechin. Six grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive her.

Georgine Pechin devoted most of her life to championing the cause of two of her sons who were retarded. Despite the impact of Fragile X on her children, her marriage and her life, she was dedicated to the notion that all her children should have a home with their family.

She created an independent life in the Pocono Mountains, building a house of her own design, and bringing her elegance and grace to a new community.

She died peacefully of old age, alternately charming and challenging her caretakers, and brandishing her uncompromising spirit to the end. Her physical beauty remained to her final days.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the National Fragile X Foundation. Fragile X is the mutation carried by Georgine and all her sisters, causing retardation in their children.
