George Joseph

George Joseph, beloved husband, father, grandfather, decorated World War II veteran, and pioneering founder of Mercury Insurance, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026, at the age of 104.

The son of Lebanese immigrants, George was raised in Beckley, West Virginia, during the Great Depression. His upbringing instilled in him a remarkable resilience and strong work ethic that defined the rest of his life. In 1941, he volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Corps. As a B-17 navigator during World War II, he flew 50 combat missions across the North African and Mediterranean theaters.

Following his military service, George attended Harvard College on the GI Bill. As with many things in his life, he was in a hurry, and he graduated in just three years in 1949 with a double major in mathematics and physics. He soon moved west to Los Angeles, training as an actuary by day while spending evenings selling insurance door-to-door.

In 1962, George founded Mercury General Corporation with a clear vision: to offer consumers a fairer, more transparent, and more affordable auto insurance product. He led the company as Chief Executive Officer for 45 years, growing its annual revenue to over $3 billion, continuing to steer its course as Executive Chairman until his passing. Reflecting on his impressive career, George once shared, “I hope I’ll be remembered for the contribution I’ve made to the insurance industry, and the changes Mercury has pioneered that have led to billions of dollars in savings for consumers.” His enduring legacy touches not only millions of policyholders but also generations of employees and independent agents whose careers were supported by what he started with Mercury.

Yet, for all his substantial professional success, George found his deepest purpose at home. He operated with incredible efficiency at the office so he could be fully present for his family. During his forty years of marriage to his beloved wife, Vicky, he expressed his love and devotion through daily, sweet yet simple gestures and quiet acts of care.

George approached everyday life with curious energy and wit. He was a fixture on tennis courts at his tennis club, playing doubles with the same circle of friends for decades. An insatiable reader, his weekends were routinely spent devouring texts on finance, investing, longevity, and fiction. At home, he could often be found in his backyard garden, trying to improve his yield of tomatoes, berries, and stone fruits, while devising creative defenses to outsmart neighborhood squirrels and birds.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Vicky, his five children, and his ten cherished grandchildren. His sharp mind, generous heart, and humble spirit will be deeply missed and remembered forever.
