George Benton Adams

George Benton Adams, son of the late Claire and Harrington Adams, died May 8, 2021 at the age of 96 in Covina, CA. Born in Bethlehem, PA, George graduated from Liberty High School and Moravian College with a B.S. degree in economics and business administration, worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. and later Ohio Casualty Insurance Co. He entered the U.S. Army in January 1943 and served in Europe as a combat engineer. He was honorably discharged in March 1946.

For over 20 years, George served as a troop dad with the Boy Scouts, taking young scouts on weekend campouts, hikes, and weeklong treks in the High Sierras. George loved nature and enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states and 16 countries. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Covina, CA, and later White Avenue Baptist Church, Pomona, CA. His first and second wives, Cecelia Wonderly Adams and Jean Jackson Adams, preceded him in death. He is survived by sons Timothy Adams of Glendora, CA, and Christopher Adams of Washington, DC; sister Betty Roach of Nazareth, PA; and long-time companion Phyllis Riggs of Ontario, CA.

Services will be held on May 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Covina, Divine Shelter Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Environmental Council.
