Genoveva "Bebeng" Abdon Tijamo, a beacon of strength and a source of unconditional love, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2025, in Woodland Hills, California. She was born on January 3, 1933, in Cebu City, Philippines. Throughout her remarkable life, Bebeng embodied resilience, wisdom, and a compassionate spirit that touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Bebeng was not just a mother; she was a rock, a boulder of unyielding support to her family. Her tenacity and problem-solving prowess shone through even in the most trying of times. With each challenge life presented, whether it was the struggles of poverty or the heart-wrenching loss of loved ones, Bebeng faced them with grace and fortitude, inspiring her children to believe in their strength and capabilities.
Her daughter beautifully articulated Bebeng’s impact in their family, sharing how “we had several major setbacks,” yet through it all, “her willpower weathered any storm.” It was her strength that transformed meager meals into joyous occasions, turning everyday life into lessons of creativity and resourcefulness. With simple ingredients, like rice and bagoong, Bebeng infused happiness into their dining table, showcasing her ability to make the best out of any situation.
Bebeng was also deeply involved in her children's education and extracurricular interests. She exemplified the adage, “Paano ka matututo kung hindi mo gagawin?” which means, “How would you learn if you don’t do it?” Her enthusiasm for her children's growth was boundless, whether she was up late helping with school projects or serving as a supportive audience for performances. She fostered a culture of learning and engagement in her home, ensuring that her children thrived both academically and socially.
Bebeng is survived by her beloved children: Carmelita Mapile, Generico Tijamo, Editha Winterhalter, and Allan Tijamo. She also leaves behind a cherished legacy of 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, each carrying a piece of her spirit within them.
Bebeng was preceded in death by her loving daughter, Maria Teresa Francisco, and her devoted husband, Uldarico Buenavista Tijamo. Their memories remain intertwined with hers, entwined in the hearts and narratives of their family.
As a devoted Scrabble player, Bebeng not only challenged her family with her wit and skill but also taught them the value of strategy and perseverance. Those who knew her will fondly remember her laughter, her love for crocheting, and the warmth of her embrace.
