Generoso Villanueva

December 24, 1943 — September 21, 2025

Generoso Custodio Villanueva, lovingly known as Gener, departed this life on September 21, 2025, at San Antonio Regional Hospital in Upland, California, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication. Born on December 24, 1943, in Cavite City, Philippines, he was a beacon of strength and compassion to everyone who knew him.

Gener’s career began in 1961 when he took his first steps into the workforce at the U.S. Naval Station in Cavite City. His fervent desire to provide a good life to his young family led him to work overseas in 1973, marking the start of a journey that would take him to many corners of the world, but away from his family for many months, without the communication tools that are available to many today.   Gener embraced the opportunity to work with a Norwegian company, which provided a unique balance between his work and his beloved family, allowing him to spend half of the year with them. In 2002, he proudly immigrated to the United States, enriching the lives of those around him with his warmth and inviting nature.

He was a very dedicated husband, father and grandfather.  Everything that he pursued was for the interest and betterment of his family.  He was an inspiration to his children and grandchildren, and he was very proud of their accomplishments.  He would always find ways to help and support his family.  In the last decade, he learned how to cook and perfected several recipes that are his grandchildren's favorites.  Nothing can compare to his Kare-kare, Bistek, Sinampalukan, and Sinigang.  Gener took so much pleasure in watching his family enjoy his cooking and it became a cornerstone of his family's impromptu gatherings, filled with laughter and joy.  He was happiest when surrounded by his loving family.

A devout Christian, he viewed his faith as the guiding principle of his life, finding comfort and community at the Filipino Community United Presbyterian Church in Azusa, California. This cherished place became his second home, where the members wrapped him in a family-like embrace.

Gener is survived by his devoted wife, Herminia; his loving children, Mimi (and her husband, Toan), Hendry (and his wife Gay), and Hanz (and his wife, Liz); his grandchildren, Aica (and her husband, Ryan), Kaitlyn, Hannah (and her husband, Gabe), Helina, Janella, Dani, Patrick, Aiden, Anthony, and Adam; his siblings, Rizal, Luvie, Eder, Rico, Lanie, and Ike and their spouses; and his very good friend, Eddie.  Each of them carries a piece of his spirit within their hearts, remembering his unwavering love and support, which will continue to inspire them throughout their lives.

Gener was predeceased by his father, Manolo; his mother, Manuela; and his brothers, Amor and Donnie. Their memories are entwined with Gener’s story, and we remember them fondly as he rejoins them in eternal peace.

Gener's final days were marked by the courage he showed in the face of pancreatic cancer. He remained a pillar of strength for his family. His optimism and faith in God was a true inspiration that helped him and his family push through the challenges of the disease.  His empathetic nature and lively spirit will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Funeral services to celebrate Gener's life will be held at the Forest Lawn - Covina Hills - Church of our Heritage in Covina, California. The first service will take place on October 24, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  A memorial service will be held at the same location on October 25, 2025, at 2:00 PM. Graveyard service will immediately follow.  A reception will be held at the Diamond Palace Seafood Restaurant in Diamond Bar, California at 6:00 PM.

As we gather to honor and remember Gener, let us reflect on the love he poured into this world—his laughter, his love for family, his loyal friendship, and his unwavering faith that brought so much joy to those around him. His legacy will live on through his family and friends, forever etched in our hearts.
