September 4, 1938 — July 26, 2023

We regretfully announce the peaceful passing of Garry Damon Carter on July 26, 2023 in Upland, California, his loving family by his side.

Born September 4, 1938, the second son to Charlie Thomas and Willie Brewer Bell Carter, Damon lived his early life in Carrollton, Georgia, with his brothers Charles, Jerrell and Rodney, along with several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends nearby, in the countryside of west Georgia.

Growing up well outside metropolitan Atlanta, led to his love of the beauty of nature, and ultimately to his pursuit of Graphics and Fine Art in his professional life. Damon possessed an obvious artistic inclination and talent from a very young age, drawing and sketching friends and family, as well as a favorite subject of his at that age, the old west, including cowboys and indians.

After graduating High School, Damon went on to West Georgia University for early undergrad work and then ultimately on to the University of Georgia in Athens where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design.  Damon then enjoyed a long and successful career in graphic design and illustration with Mead Packaging in Atlanta, where he retired after almost forty years of employment.

Also by this point in his life, in the nineteen eighties, Damon began pursuing his love of Fine Art and Illustration studies with his friend and mentor Richard McDonald, a nationally known illustrator and fine artist who also lived in Atlanta at the time. He subsequently, around this same time, began a fine art career in portraits, landscape and cityscape painting, mostly in oils. This pursuit led to a flourishing and decorated career in portraiture and gallery fine art painting in the late nineties as well, toward the end of his commercial career, and through his over twenty year retirement from the commercial art world, until his passing.

Damon is fondly remembered as a kind, caring father, brother, grandfather, artist and friend to the countless who knew him. Somewhat reserved by nature, Damon possessed a never ending enthusiasm and love for his artistic pursuits, his family and life in general.

Damon is survived by his daughters Margi and Angela, son Gregory, niece and nephew Nicole and Will; Angela's children.
