Floyd Russell ("Russ") Mulvany, 96 years old, of Indian Wells, CA, died on June 18, 2019 as a result of natural causes. He was born near El Dorado, KS on August 22, 1922. As the only child he was raised by his mother and step-father, owner of a Cadillac repair service, who proved to be a good provider for a close knit family.
In 1935, the family moved to Los Angeles, CA. Russ matriculated at Hollywood High School in 1936, where he signed up for ROTC and quickly came to embrace the profession of arms.
Upon his graduation in 1939, Russ was too young to join the US Army and enrolled at Los Angeles City College, where he began acquiring college credits. In January 1941, Russ enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps at age 18.
LTC Mulvany served in the US Army for thirty-one years, six months, and nine days. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. In addition to his enlisted service in the US Army Air Corps in WWII, he later served as a proud member of US Army Infantry, Airborne, and Special Forces units. His honors included the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart Medal, World War II Service Medal w/2 service stars, Korean Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal w/5 Campaign Stars.
Following his retirement from the US Army in 1972, LTC Mulvany joined the administrative staff at California State University, Northridge, where he served as an assistant to the Vice President until 1976. He went on to earn a Certificate of Fine Arts at Los Angeles City College; and a two year Certificate in Archaeology at Moorpark College in Ventura. Later he commanded the Civil Air Patrol Squadron at Truckee, CA for 4 years. He then went on to serve as a docent at the Palm Springs Air Museum from 2002 - 2017.
Russ was married to Barbara J. Evans in 1973, his wife of 38 years, who preceded him in death in March 2011.
A memorial service will be held at the Riverside National Cemetery at 10:15 AM on Friday, July 5th.
