Florencio Layo, Jr.

Florencio Corcino Layo, Jr., 87, of Los Angeles, California, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 19, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Florencio was born on April 14, 1939, in Mambusao, Capiz, Philippines, to Florencio Layo, Sr. and Consuelo Layo, née Corcino. The second youngest of nine children, he was affectionately known by those who loved him as Junior or Jun.

Jun’s childhood was shaped by both the beauty of his hometown and the hardships of war. He remembered being carried through the fields of Mambusao as his family fled to the mountains to seek safety during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Despite these difficult early experiences, Jun grew into a joyful and sociable young man. From an early age, he was devoted to the Catholic faith, proudly serving as an altar boy and becoming the priest's favorite server. He loved playing the guitar and often served as a reliable wingman for friends participating in the Filipino tradition of serenading the person they hoped to court, known as Harana.

Jun studied mechanical engineering at the University of Mapúa in Manila. He later became a head engineer for the Department of Municipal Transportation in Capiz.

Jun first became a father with the birth of his son, Joseph. In 1970, he met the love of his life, Nida. Together, they built a beautiful and enduring life, marked by devotion, resilience, and family. In 1975, amid the political unrest of the Marcos presidency, Jun and Nida moved to the United States with Sheila, who had just recently been born. They created a loving home for their growing family, which expanded when their youngest child Shaun was born a few years later.

Jun embraced life fully. He was an active member of Círculo Mambuseñio, serving as President for one term. He also sang with the Southern California Filipino Dental Association choral group. He enjoyed traveling with Nida, singing karaoke, gardening, playing mahjong, and cheering for the Lakers and Dodgers.

To everyone who knew him, Jun was a source of strength, generosity, and unwavering support. He had an unforgettable smile and would do everything within his power to help the people he loved. He helped create a path for several relatives to immigrate to the United States, giving them opportunities to build new lives of their own. When Jun was diagnosed with cancer, many of those same relatives came together to care for and support him, reflecting the love and generosity he had shown throughout his life.

Above all, Jun was a devoted husband, a loving father, and the very best Lolo. His greatest joy was his family, and his legacy will live on through the many people whose lives were made better because of his kindness, sacrifice, humor, and love.

Jun is survived by his beloved wife, Nida Layo, née Borro; his children, Joseph Layo and his wife, Juliette; Sheila Miranda and her husband, Dennis; and Shaun Layo and his wife, Sherry; and his grandchildren, Sharina, Maia, Christine, Christian, Tristan, Nicole, Charlotte, Noah, Alexander, Natalie, and Keanu.

He is also survived by his sisters, Roseni Layo Garcia, Teresita Layo Bueno, and Catalina Layo Cordenillo, as well as many extended family members and dear friends whom he loved deeply.

Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn - Glendale.

The funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Our Mother of Good Counsel Catholic Church.

Jun will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
