Evelyn Medina was born in Standard, California on November 10th, 1924, at 11:50 PM to Pasqual and Rosa Hurtado. It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that her family announces Evelyn's peaceful passing in her home in San Diego on January 18th, 2022. She was 97 years old.
Her parents were both from Mexico and when they left there to come to the U.S., her two older brothers unfortunately died in transit. This made her the eldest of 6 children: Ross, Albert, Lucy, Armida, and Sara. Because she was born ten minutes before November 11th, she celebrated her birthday on Veteran's Day her entire life. Many official documents throughout her lifetime reflect November 11th as her actual birthday. She graduated high school and went on to a business college for a year. She worked in Monterey California and also in San Francisco and at one point she wanted to join the Navy to become a nurse, but her father wouldn't allow it.
She married Ernest Medina on August 24th, 1947 in Reno, Nevada. They had 2 girls: Elizabeth in 1948, and Elaine in 1949. Evelyn got a job with the Post Office in the late 50's, then got divorced in the late 60's. In 1987, she retired from the Post Office as head of personnel in Redondo Beach, California. She was a dynamic, strong, independent, and blunt woman who loved to travel. On one trip to France she made it a point to visit Jim Morrison's grave because she loved The Doors' music. She loved rock and roll, and would go listen to different rock stars like Janis Joplin on the Sunset Strip with her boyfriend Bill Greene. She lived her way, surrounded by family and visitors in Hermosa Beach, on a hill, in a beautiful home with floor to ceiling glass windows. Her house overlooked the ocean from Palos Verdes to Mailbu. She loved vacationing in Hawaii, and on a couple of occasions took her family and the grandchildren with her. In 2003, she moved from Hermosa Beach to San Diego to be closer to her family. She loved sunny days and working in the yard tending her dwarf fruit trees, plants and flowers. She was a scheduled woman who loved relaxing in the evening, watching the news, and precisely at 8pm, she would enjoy her nightly Beefeater Maritini.
Evelyn is survived by her eldest daughter, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. She was a force to be reckoned with her whole life, and her influence will resonate forever. We will all miss her greatly.
