Evelyn M. Hokenson

September 12, 1943 — February 18, 2019

Evelyn May Kovats was born on September 12, 1943 in Queens, NY to Sherry and Edward Kovats. Evelyn was Sherry's only child and they maintained a very strong and loving relationship her entire life. The family moved around New York several times before eventually moving to El Monte, CA in 1955.

Evelyn attended El Monte high school, graduating in 1960 after only 3 years. Immediately upon graduation she went to work full time for the city of Los Angeles at the Library. Evelyn was an excellent typist. At the time that skill was not nearly as common as today. One had to be precise in their work as there was no delete key, cut and paste, or UNDO commands.

In 1962, Evelyn met Allen Hokenson. They dated for a couple of years and were married on July 11, 1964. In 1966 they moved into their home in West Covina where she lived for the rest of her life.

Evelyn and Allen had a son, Eric, in 1970 and another son, Mark, in 1973. Evelyn and Allen were both very loving parents to their sons. They were always very supportive of them for their education, careers and family. Evelyn and Allen also took in Sherry to live with them in the early 1970s where she stayed until her death in 1998.

In 1978 Evelyn contracted Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She was very sick and was treated aggressively with chemotherapy and radiation. Fortunately, she made a full recovery from the Lymphoma, but the effects of the radiation treatment were long lasting.

After recovering from Lymphoma, Evelyn took time to raise her children and volunteer as the Church Secretary at Our Savior Lutheran. In addition, she engaged in making decorative cakes for friends and family. She was quite skilled in cake decorating for Birthdays, Anniversaries, and even a few weddings.

In 1985, Evelyn resumed her career with the City of Los Angeles, and eventually transferred from the Library to the Department of Water and Power. She retired in 1998 after over 30 years of service.

Evelyn and Allen were blessed with their four grandchildren: Rachael, Anthony, Ayden and Zoey. Evelyn was so excited and happy to be a grandmother. She had very special birthdays for her grandchildren when they were young.

After retirement, Evelyn and Allen bought a 36' RV. They spent the better part of ten years traveling North America in the RV, visiting family and friends and seeing many great sights along the way. They really enjoyed their time touring the country and were very happy spending those years together.

Evelyn had been in declining health for the last few years, but her loving husband Allen was by her side the whole time. Despite all the physical ailments, she never lost faith in the Lord and her family. Evelyn Hokenson was called home to be with her Savior on February 18, 2019. She was surrounded by her loved ones during her final days.

Evelyn has left behind a legacy of love, friendship and faithfulness. She always such a positive influence by being kind to others and always looking for the best in people. She loved to celebrate her loved one's accomplishments and offered encouragement during their setbacks. We are all richer for knowing her, and will honor her in the way we are kind to each other and love our family.
