Ethel's Life

Ethel Maude Weetly Blackwood of Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, was born on April 30, 1940, to Thomas Theophilus Parker and Lillian Blackwood. Her mother, Lillian, was known to be a beautiful young woman who was the love of Thomas’s life. When Ethel was at the tender age of 15 months, Lillian unexpectedly passed away. She was only 26. Ethel's father, Thomas, was left with a broken heart and the responsibility of caring for three small children on his own.

Ethel, being the youngest and the only girl, proved to be her father's greatest concern. Feeling as though he could not provide her with everything she needed, she was placed in the care of different family members and friends. This decision brought with it many life lessons and challenges which shaped her, but God protected her all the while.

There came a time when Ethel met her soon-to-be husband and the love of her life, Laws Weetly. Before her father passed, he gave his permission for Laws to marry his daughter, with the promise to always take care of her. On March 6, 1957, she married Laws. On their wedding day, it rained. Ethel believed that the rain was a sign from God signifying new beginnings and many blessings. She looked forward to starting her new life which she knew would fulfill her heart’s many hopes and dreams and set her on a new journey sprinkled with God's blessings.

In 1964, Ethel came to the United States with her four children to be reunited with her husband, who had come prior to their arrival to prepare a new home and a better life for their family. Moving to California proved to be one of God’s biggest blessings for her.

Here, she enjoyed being the First Lady to the congregations of the churches her husband pastored. Traveling to conventions and visiting rest homes to pray for the sick were just a few of the ways she honored the heart of God.

Here, she poured her heart into becoming the loving, caring, and giving mother she never had the privilege to experience growing up, always making sure her children had everything they needed and wanted. Christmas trees overflowing with gifts, homemade birthday cakes, and hand-sewn clothing for her children became her signature love language.

Ethel Weetly—affectionately known as Miss Etel, Ets, and Grandma—passed away on May 12, 2026, at 2:38 a.m. in Lake Forest, California. She spent her last week of life surrounded by a few close family members and her five children, who sang her favorite hymns and spoke words of honor, gratitude, and love to her soul in celebration of her virtuous life. That morning, the morning she passed, sprinkles of raindrops fell. New beginnings and new blessings once again sealed the destiny of her future home.

Ethel is survived by her husband, Laws Weetly; her children, Louis Weetly, Darna Poole, Carlos Weetly, Hermelinda Brumfield, and Victor Weetly; her grandchildren, Andre Weetly, Christopher Weetly, Lyndon Poole, Taliyah Chance, Liliana Weetly, Leland Poole, Charles Weetly, Nicole O’Lawrence, Camielle Weetly, Melieck Robinson, Lauryn Weetly, Devon Weetly, Jeremiah Weetly,

A song & poem near and dear to her heart!

Now the Day Is Over - Author: Sabine Baring-Gould

Now the day is over,

Night is drawing nigh,

Shadows of the evening

Steal across the sky.

Now the darkness gathers,

Stars begin to peep,

Birds, and beasts and flowers

Soon will be asleep.

Jesus, give the weary

Calm and sweet repose;

With Thy tenderest blessing

May mine eyelids close.

Grant to little children

Visions bright of Thee;

Guard the sailors tossing

On the deep, blue sea.

Comfort those who suffer,

Watching late in pain;

Those who plan some evil

From their sin restrain.

Through the long night watches

May Thine angels spread

Their white wings above me,

Watching round my bed.

When the morning wakens,

Then may I arise

Pure, and fresh, and sinless

In Thy holy eyes.

Glory to the Father,

Glory to the Son,

And to Thee, blest Spirit,

While all ages run.
