Dr. Estela V. Avendaño

On the morning of February 22, 2024 Dr. Estela Vizcarra Avendaño passed peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 90.

Though she was blessed with 90 incredible years, those who knew her will agree that it wasn't nearly enough time. Estela was known for her zest for life and her numerous achievements. Her life began in Pasay City, Philippines, in 1933. She dedicated herself to academic excellence, and graduated Cum Laude from the University of the East in 1958, earning her Doctorate of Dental Medicine. In 1967, she married Herminio Avendaño, with whom she had three children, Jay, Norman, and Allan. Her passion for teaching led her back to her alma mater, where she became a respected and beloved professor of dentistry. Her scholarly contributions extended beyond the classroom, as she authored two textbooks that remain influential in the field to this day. In 1982, Estela and her family immigrated to the United States, where she established a thriving dental practice in Covina, California. She was an active member of various dental associations and served as President of the Southern California Filipino Dental Association. Estela was also awarded fellowships in the International College of Dentists, Academy of Dentistry International and the College of American Dentists. Known to her former students, friends and colleagues as "Ma'am", she served her community diligently until her retirement in 2010. 

Estela was a beacon of positivity, finding joy in every aspect of her life. Her devotion to her faith, family, students, and her profession knew no bounds. She often sent cards, gifts, made phone calls or sent text messages to people she knew to remind them that they are appreciated and loved. Everyday, Estela would wake up at the crack of dawn to ensure she had enough time to pray for everyone including the family dogs. Her treasured prayer book, brimming with heartfelt wishes for everyone, stands as a testament to her love and compassion.

Despite facing health challenges, Estela maintained a grateful attitude and approached every obstacle with determination and strength. Though she is no longer physically present, her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication endures. Her memory will be cherished by countless family members, friends, students, and colleagues whose lives she touched profoundly.

Estela leaves behind her children, two grandchildren Lauren and Jason, sisters Cora and Fe, sons-in-law Peter and Chris and numerous other family and friends she met along the way.

May her spirit find eternal peace and continue to inspire those who knew her.
