Elsie Neuvert

August 13, 1915 — January 25, 2013

Elsie Neuvert, 97, born on August 13, 1915, in Russell, Kansas passed away January 25, 2013. She was the 5th of 12 children of David and Katherine Galyardt and spent her early years on the farm working hard and helping raise her younger siblings. She met the love of her life, Ed Neuvert, whom she married in 1934. They spent a few years in Herington Kansas, then moved to Los Angeles in 1938. Ed was drafted into the Army in 1942, and Elsie went to work as a "Rosie the Riveter" at the Douglas Aircraft plant from 1942 to 1946. After Ed returned from the war, they bought a house in Sherman Oaks where she lived for the next 62 years and raised their only child, Vickie. She held various jobs after Ed had his heart attack in 1955, including food service worker at a local school and salesgirl at JC Penneys. She worked 23 years as a grocery checker before retiring. She was active for many years in the First Presbyterian Church of Sherman Oaks, the local chapter of National Smooth Dancers, and spent over 20 years as a volunteer at Valley Presbyterian Hospital. After her grandson Tony was born, she loved spending time with him, taking him to his baseball and basketball practices and games, and playing out in the street with him after school. Only a stroke in 2008 finally slowed her down, and she was fortunate to find excellent residential care in her final years. She remained close to her brothers and sisters and their extended families throughout her long life, and she had a wonderful circle of friends that she also counted as family. She will have a formal exhibit in the National Park Services Rosie the Riveter museum in Richmond, CA. She resided in North Hills, California at the time of her passing. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, CA.
