Elinor Jane Clark, a beloved educator and cherished community member, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 29, 2026, in Long Beach, California. Born on October 20, 1928, in Pasadena, California, she lived a full and vibrant life of 97 years.
As a young child, Elinor moved to Long Beach with her family, where she attended Horace Mann Elementary School, Jefferson Middle School, and Wilson High School, graduating in the class of 1946. She began her higher education at the University of California, Berkeley, aspiring to become a doctor. However, her studies were interrupted when she contracted polio. Undeterred, Elinor pursued her passion for education, earning a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Southern California.
Elinor dedicated her career to teaching biology at Downey High School, where she inspired countless students with her passion for science and learning. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, as she became a founding member of the Long Beach Doll Club and was an active participant in the Garden Club. Elinor was also a devoted member of the Belmont Heights United Methodist Church, where she found a supportive and loving community.
Her love for travel took her across the globe, from the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru to the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska, and the historic sites of Turkey, Brazil, Egypt, and Israel. She especially enjoyed cruises that allowed her to explore new cultures and meet people from all walks of life.
Elinor is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Mabell Lawson. She is survived by her cousins, Daniel Harnetiaux and Jim Harnetiaux, as well as extended family in Illinois. Her church family at Belmont Heights United Methodist Church and the thousands of students whose lives she touched over the years also mourn her loss.
A visitation will be held on Monday, February 16, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Devotion Room at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 4471 Lincoln Avenue, Cypress, CA 90630. A memorial service celebrating Elinor's life will take place on Tuesday, February 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Belmont Heights United Methodist Church, 317 Termino Ave, Long Beach, CA 90803, followed by a light reception in Wesley Hall. The family will hold an interment service at the gravesite at 1 p.m.
Elinor Jane Clark will be remembered for her dedication to education, her adventurous spirit, and her unwavering kindness. She leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, and community that will be cherished by all who knew her.
