Edwin was born in Albion, Michigan on March 14, 1927, to Eli and Sophia Stanfield; he was the second child of four children. Growing up mostly in Mobile, Alabama, he graduated from Dunbar High School and he loved music. Edwin played the saxophone and had professional bands with his siblings and friends and was known as "Big Red Stanfield."

In 1944, he married the love of his life, Bernice Ozeil Pinkney and they went on to have four children; Edwin Bennett, Jr., Rayford Tyrone, Carlos Gerard, and Booker Eli Stanfield. Edwin enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945, where he served in World War II and the Korean War. Edwin and Bernice relocated their family to Los Angeles in 1953.

He accepted Christ early in life and was a devoted member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he was a Deacon and sung in the choir. Edwin received his Associate's Degree from Los Angeles Trade Technical College in Electrical Construction.

Later in life, he married Odessa Waters. In 1988, Edwin retired as an Electrician for the City of Los Angeles. Edwin enjoyed spending quality time with his family, friends, and attending the Young Men of Mobile Breakfasts. He was a Charter Member of The National Museum of African American History and Culture, he was a hard worker and lead his family by example.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, Eli and Sophia Stanfield, his brothers, Marquis Stanfield, Sr. and Huebert Stanfield, his sister, Vivian Stanfield Pickett, his first love, Bernice Stanfield, and his sons, Edwin Bennett Stanfield, Jr., and Rayford Tyrone Stanfield.

He leaves to mourn two sons, Carlos Gerard Stanfield and Booker Eli Stanfield, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
