Edwin Estle Johnston

August 3, 1941 — June 14, 2017

Edwin Estle Johnston, 75, of Laguna Beach, California, passed away June 14, 2017. He leaves his devoted wife of 44 years, Carin Johnston, his two sons, Justin and Cameron Johnston, his sister, Sharon Johnston Dees and four grandchildren, Liam, Rowan, Scarlet and Rocco.

Edwin "Eddie" Johnston was born and raised in Glendale, California, son of Estle Edwin Johnston and Mildred Johnston. In his early years he attended and graduated from the Glendale Unified Schools of Mark Keppel, Toll and Hoover and then proceeded to attend USC. After college, Eddie joined the family business, Suppose U Drive Truck Rental Service. During the Vietnam War, he also joined the Air Force Reserves and for 2 years both worked for the family business and served our country. After his service, Eddie returned his focus to the family business where he continued to hone his skills as a business executive and owner.

In 1973, Eddie married Catharina Maria "Carin" and soon after had their two boys, Justin and Cameron. Eddie loved his family most of all, which is why he built a house in Glendale near the family business, allowing him the opportunity to work close to home and spend as much time as possible with his family.

In 1983, Eddie's father passed away, leaving his wife Mildred and Eddie to take over the family business. As President, he ran Suppose U Drive for over 25 years until he retired in 2007, leaving the business to his two sons who continue to run the business to this day after 81 years.

Eddie was especially passionate about his family, his lifelong friends and the family business. He also loved travel, fishing, boating, motorcycles, antique cars, fine wine and house building (he built two homes and two commercial buildings). He loved his trips to Europe, especially visiting family in the Netherlands, where his wife was born. Eddie loved boating and spent much time over the years on his boats in Catalina. He also loved his motorcycle adventure down the Baja peninsula and fishing in Cabo and Alaska with his two boys. Eddie would always say he was going to live life the way he wanted to, and he sure did.

Eddie loved and was deeply committed to Dignity Health – Glendale Memorial Hospital. His love for this facility extended to his service on the Board of Directors of the Glendale Memorial Health Foundation where he served as Chair. He leaves a legacy at the hospital and the Foundation through his permanent recognition as Foundation Board Emeritus.

Eddie always made a lasting impression with his sense of humor and sarcasm and was always generous and welcoming to anyone that met him. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Glendale, California and services will be held on Tuesday June 27th at 10:00AM at the Church of the Recessional, followed by a reception at Eddies favorite restaurant the Tam O' Shanter.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable gifts made in honor of Eddie be directed to Glendale Memorial Health Foundation, 1420 S. Central Avenue, Glendale, CA 91204; or online at https://www.supportglendale.org/ways-to-give/donate-online. For questions, please call (818) 502-2375.

Your gifts will be applied to the Humankindness in the Making initiative, a special project to remodel the 2nd floor of the hospital with a unique focus to relocate and build a new Gastrointestinal (GI) Lab for comprehensive care for the treatment of the digestive system. For your gifts, Eddie will be publicly honored in this remodeled space.
